Looking for recommendations please….
Planning a ski trip for a family of 4 - either week before Christmas or Christmas week.
where would you recommend?

3 skiers. 1 ski / snowboarder
kids age 9 & 13
In France can ski blues. Some reds. Occasional black.
1 parent intermediate. Other advanced. Both unfit!
prefer to drive.
don’t mind self catering.
would love kids to do 4 hour ski school
in the morning and then meet for lunch and ski together in the afternoon.
have skied 3 valleys like this and got in a lot of runs as a family!
love to have access to a pool but local pool in the town worked well in VT.

have been reading about saalbach and Leogang and the Salzburg Christmas markets.

sounds tempting but open to suggestions!

preferably accommodation and ski schools, not just the resort.

many thanks

hopefully Some people who know Austria will be along soon, otherwise try snowheads?

Saalbach (and the entire Ski Circus) has exactly what you're looking for - mainly blue runs, plenty of reds and a few blacks runs, including last year's World Championship pistes on Zwolferkogel in Hinterglemm 😬

Leogang is one of the smaller villages in the Ski Circus, but if you've no need for night life then it is an excellent alternative to the busier resorts of Saalbach and Hinterglemm. The most convenient accommodation is around the Asitzbahn and the Steinbergbahn lift stations, rather than in Leogang village itself.

Group lessons in Austria are usually all day - 2 hours morning, 2 hours afternoon with a supervised lunch break on the mountain - private lessons can be whatever you want, so 3 hours in the morning (e.g. 9.00 - 12.00) if that works for you. All instructors speak English. There are several ski schools – including Snowacademy, Furstauer and EasySki in Saalbach, or Snow & Fun, Penhab, Helly’s and Skill in Hinterglemm. Leogang also has ski schools.

Most of the larger hotels and apartment-hotels have pools and wellness spa areas, as do some of the private self-catering apartment buildings such as Casa Alpina. In Saalbach look at the AlpinResort ValSaa, Hotel Saalbacherhof, Das Kohlmais or Hotel Gappmayer. In Hinterglemm the millionaires stay at the Alpine Palace, while the Adler Resort, Unterschwartzach or Glemmtalerhof are popular. Crystal and Inghams have Saalbach on the programme and are worth considering. For apartments look at Airbnb or Sunweb or the Tourist Office website: Saalbach.com

The drive from Calais or from the Hook of Holland/Rotterdam takes 12-14 hours.
As @abricotine suggests, also look at the Snowheads website where there is a long thread on the forum specifically about Saalbach-Hinterglemm

Thank you!! Good idea. Will take this knowledge and pool it with what I can find on SnowHeads.

thanks for the heads up re lessons being all day. Will look into the affordable suggestions. Leo gang sounds good. We don’t need rausous night life with kids in tow!

Kaprun/Zell am See. The glacier provides snowsure skiing, pretty lake and train into Salzburg.

Kaprun/Zell am See are on the same lift ticket as Saalbach-Hinterglemm but the skiing there is nowhere near as good as in the Ski Circus.

The glacier is bleak and cold and while there are fantastic views up there on a sunny day, it can take an hour or more to get from the car park to the top on the various cable cars and most of the runs are very short and only served by T-bars. It is snowsure, but can often be in a white-out - and on the rare occasions there is poor snow anywhere else in the area, everyone tries to get to Kitzsteinhorn, with very long queues for the lifts and to actually get on the piste. I've skied in Saalbach every Christmas for the last 20 years and thanks to the great snow-making there has never been a Christmas where it has not been possible to ski.

Zell am See has plenty of easy cruising but nowhere near as much as the Ski Circus. It is worth a day trip from Saalbach or Leogang and can be easily reached using the Zell am See Xpress lift from Viehhofen in the Glemm valley.
