Injured and can’t ski 😥

Have trained hard for last 8 months, was feeling fit and strong but an old hip niggle has flared up to the extent that I can’t ski (or walk very well). Paid for ortho consultation and cortisone injection (££) last week in the hope it would make me ski worthy but it hasn’t.
Have just cancelled my lift pass and equipment and am trying to muster some positivity for enjoying the mountain air whilst the rest of the family and friends enjoy their days on the fantastic snowy slopes (Austria). Any tips for enjoying a non ski trip to the mountains; Nordic walking is out as I’m not very comfortable walking (likely labral tear) can limp shortish distances. I’ve got some good books, don’t think I can face taking up knitting! Really need a positivity injection as don’t want to infect the trip with negative vibes but just feel like crying ATM 😥

Sending sympathy. Can you spend a bit of time in a spa? Hot tub or massage? And then relax with book in the sunshine? How far are you from a town? Could you go for the day if it all gets too much in the mountains.

garlictwist · 31/03/2025 15:09

Sorry I don’t have any advice but just sympathy. I also have a labral tear and am struggling with having to give up the sport I love and which my husband and friends all still merrily do (mountain biking). Can I ask if your tear has been diagnosed and if they plan to operate? How long have you had it?

Can you get gondola or similar up the mountain so you can at least sit on a sunny mountain top and meet your party for lunch somewhere?

is there skidoo hire anywhere?

try as I might, I couldn’t love skiing. What I did discover is that some ski lodges are better than others. Most seem to be busy, almost institutional places that can handle the crowds. What you want to do is seek out a quiet place, be it a ski lodge or a bar that has a nice fireplace and big cozy chairs. The kind of place that you imagine a ski lodge looks like in a movie, not a place that has a cafeteria. Then settle in with a good book and yes, maybe take up knitting. When you get warm, take a brief trip outside in the cold air, then back inside for another hot drink.

What do you like doing in your house when you have time off? Netflix, books, napping Grin Do more of that. And TripAdvisor the place and look for anything that isn't skiing.

Sorry! I would be gutted.

Aperol Spritz is a great healer.

EllaPaella · 31/03/2025 15:36

I would be gutted too and to be honest there’s only so much reading, swimming, walking you can do alone while everyone else is off having fun on the slopes. In all honesty if this was me I’d probably tell my husband to go alone with the kids and I’d probably have a better time staying at home with the dog. Pottering around, meals out with friends, a bit of shopping etc. Do you really want to go and not be able to ski? Is staying home an option? If not then spa days, reading, meeting the others for aperol spritz at various times of the day.. I suppose it depends on where you’re going and whether you could explore the local area using buses etc? Sorry this isn’t the biggest dose of positivity 😢

Thanks for all of the kind comments.
There’s a spa in neighbouring hotel; €60 for day visitors 😮 maybe I should take up knitting!
I feel like there must be a new skill I need to master that doesn’t involve too much ambulation!
Will definitely bear healing power of aperol spritz in mind!
No formal diagnosis yet @garlictwistas annoyingly got referred for MR scan instead of MR arthrogram (physio I saw thought it was my back and sent me off doing back exercises with no useful effect) but given limited relief from cortisone injection and sensation of blocked / locked range of movement and limited flexion / adduction I’m sure it must be joint / loose body type issue. when I try and cross legs (ankle over opposite knee in sitting, figure of 4 style) I feel like the whole joint locks up 😬 How was yours diagnosed?

@LakeFlyPie I had an MRI (not an arthogram but it was a 3T machine so you don't need one). They've basically told me there's nothing they can do and that plenty of people have labral tears but I am still limited and in pain so kind of struggling to figure out what that means going forward.

How long have you had your symptoms?

I'm sorry to hear you're stuck not being able to ski. It must be so galling. I've actually shed a lot of tears over this and I'm not ashamed to say. It can be hard dealing with a loss of identity and activities that you enjoy.
