Skiing April in Tignes - no idea what to pack!

We've been skiing for years but never in April - realised I've no idea what to pack. Will I need snow boots? Will I need lots of jumpers?

Will take the usual ski jacket and ski pants but not sure what to wear for evenings/general walking around the centre...

Latest I've ever skied is March in Chamonix and there was literally no snow in the village so trainers were fine....

Mumsnet Ski threads are usually v useful so hoping someone will know!

April weather can be very variable and if you are lucky and up in Le Lac you might possibly get loads of snow and be glad of boots whereas down lower you probably wouldn’t. We stay a bit lower so just take sturdy trainers. Evenings I tend to wear a light jumper and I have a light puffer jacket.

ParsnipPuree · 12/03/2025 11:13

Doubt there will be snow in the village in April even in Tignes. I don't think Tignes is particularly dressy so I'm sure jeans and a nice jumper will be fine for the evenings. Take loads of suncream for lunch on the mountain!

abricotine · 12/03/2025 11:16

Sometimes there is loads, it just doesn’t last that long. I’ve had snow in April in the village at 1500m, and by the end of the week T shirts on the mountain. All part of the fun!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 12/03/2025 11:21

All options! You probably wont need a ski jacket, but you might.

Sunscreen, lots of it.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 12/03/2025 12:05

Thanks all - will have to pack everything but might ditch the snow boots.

While you may not need snow boots for the main streets, depending on where you're staying you may need to walk across the Front de Neige in Le Lac or Val Claret - both of which will have snow - to get to restaurants/bars/supermarket, or if you want to get eg the funicular as a foot passenger. In some areas which are vulnerable to sun, when it gets warm, puddles form on pathways and you risk soggy feet if in trainers. If it freezes overnight it can be treacherous first thing in the morning.

We have been to Tignes plenty of times in April - I always take my walking boots as the weather can be variable. We've had really warm weather at that time of year but equally, it can be bitingly cold. It's not a dress-up resort - I wear jeans/sweater/puffer jacket if out in the evening - so be prepared to add or remove layers and take sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen.

We spend every April in Tignes, best to prepare for anything. Can be warm, skiing in a hoody weather and eating outside in a t shirt or it can dump with snow. It’s worth checking the snow report just before you go. It’s a very causal resort, jeans and jumpers/t shirts in any bar/restaurant absolutely fine.

We usually only wear thinner neoprene “pipe” gloves at Easter, lots of suncream and prepare for some slush if the weather is good! Start early and finish early.

PickleSarnie · 14/03/2025 10:10

We always go in April. Last year there was loads of snow the week before we went - it was coming down really heavily on the day we arrived which made for a tense trip up the mountain 😬We had a white out on our last day - after being so used to spring skiing, it was really weird (but awesome) skiing on powder.

But some years there is no snow on the resort paths and roads and you barely need a jacket. But you do need plenty of sunscreen! Take walking boots or something just in case.

As someone above says, Tignes isn't a dress-up resort - just wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

Well we’ll be packing umbrellas as forecast is wall to wall rain……
With 7 degrees temperature forecast (and rain) for mid mountain, not sure how much skiing we’ll be doing. Anyone recommend any non ski activities in Tignes?

The forecast for next week is still sunny afaik so you must be looking further into April (long range is notoriously unreliable anyway). Don’t lose hope, you’ll have snow up high even if if it is raining below and likely have a super time. We always ski in April and in tignes you can’t go wrong. And there is always the pool (with everyone else 😂) bowling etc. But I just don’t think you’ll need it.

stringbean · 06/04/2025 19:47

If going next week it’s too far out to say with any accuracy. Precipitation will likely fall as rain at lower altitude (Les Brevieres which is 1550m) but will fall as snow higher up the mountain. Friends of ours are there this week, it’s beautifully sunny and they skied to 1550m today; yes, the snow is soft at that level as it’s been quite warm, and they may close the runs down there in due course if the snow isn’t good enough , but it will be much better high up, so stay above Val Claret, or ski towards Val d’Isere and the runs from Borsat/Bellevarde (don’t ski down to La Daille).

We were there in March and the forecast the week beforehand was for lots of snow: inthe end we had about 10-15cm initially and then it was sunny for the rest of the week.

PickleSarnie · 06/04/2025 21:35

I stupidly looked at the weather forecast too. I'm clinging to the fact that weather more than 5 days out is a coin toss in terms of accuracy. We have been so lucky in the past at Easter. Beautiful bluebird days. On the upside, it the predicted forecast does come true, it'll be fresh snow higher up at least. Just stay above Val Claret/Le Lac level

PickleSarnie · 07/04/2025 20:53

Feck knows what's happening now with the weather! Not sure there will be much sitting on terraces in the sun but looks like there will be snow 😬 although everything can change.....

We are in Val d’Isere now, skied into Tignes (Val Claret and Le Lac) yesterday. There is plenty of snow at resort level but it was very slushy. If you’re walking across the Front de Neige at either, you’ll need snow boots or robust walking boots - you’ll get very wet feet otherwise! Snow up high is good - if the weather isn’t too bad I’d head up to the Bellevarde sector (that’s the bit between Tignes and Val), the Double M run from the glacier down to Val Claret was skiing nicely yesterday too.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 17/04/2025 11:11

Well we were worried about it raining. Not worried about the snow, yet there's been so much that we've been confined to the hotel for the day. 🤯

This snow is bonkers. I don't think I've ever seen so much of it before. I reeeeeeeally, reaaaaaally hope they manage to get the pisteurs out and the lifts open tomorrow because it will be ammmmmazing.

stringbean · 17/04/2025 14:47

We’ve been looking at the webcams today - an insane amount of snow has fallen since yesterday. Watched the bloke in the waffle hut up at Toviere trying to clear the deck there; think he gave up in the end - it was about a metre deep. Really hope it all opens for you tomorrow - it will be awesome!!

abricotine · 17/04/2025 15:53

It’s wild, seeing 100cm in parts of the alps! Whistler levels of snow. Hope the lifts start spinning tomorrow — take care out there!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 17/04/2025 18:41

We're being told that the lifts are being progressively opened tomorrow and that ski school will be going ahead just potentially a bit later. M
The snow is INSANE.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 18/04/2025 17:34

Fabulous day today. Probably more than half the runs were shut so we spent a good bit of it queuing but didn't spoil it.

Snow was pretty good although definitely not a powder day as was quite heavy.

Wall to wall sunshine. Shem were going home tomorrow. 😭

PickleSarnie · 21/04/2025 15:23

It was awesome wasn't it @GargoylesofBeelzebub my kids moaned about the queuing but, by the afternoon, there were enough lifts open to allow everyone to spread out and it was brilliant.

For the first time ever, we left on Sunday so had Saturday to ski too and it was brilliant. They opened the funicular and les lanches lift so got to ski my favourite ever run - double M - several times.
