So we're looking to rent a chalet in Switzerland over Christmas 2025. DH and DD2 will want to ski but DD1 and I aren't too bothered - so want other activities/shopping on offer.

Have never done a Swiss resort, so looking for somewhere really pretty, lots to do, plenty of choice of eateries etc. Can anyone suggest somewhere, thank you.

Muerren/Wengen/Grindelwald although not that many shops, Interlaken is a short train away though. Saas Fee is more snowsure and traffic free with large pool/spa.

Thank you. Snow has to be guaranteed so realise we'll have to go high altitude.

Saas Fe is really charming but there’s not much to do but ski. That is sort of generally true of European ski resorts though. There are shops and good restaurants but not much to actually do.

Sass Fee is incredibly beautiful, the skiing is great, but the town is relatively small.

Verbier is pretty good.

Pricey though.

Saas Fe was where they filmed the Last Christmas video as I recall. Grindelwald is gorgeous. I remember the cable car costing ££££. One of the big French or Austrian resorts would probably have more going on for non-skiers though. Mayrhofen is very pretty. Or Chamonix - where you can go to Geneva for the day or up Mont Blanc and that terrifying viewing platform.

It is and there is programme on bbc2 now about it!

We are off to Saas Fee for Xmas. We’ve been a few times. It’s a very charming little village, car free is nice as you don’t get the diesel smell everywhere, just the flurries of electro taxis. It’s very snowsure up on the glacier but we’ve never failed to be able to go top to bottom at Christmas, though it can limit the easier runs in bad snow lower down if that’s a consideration. It is also eye wateringly expensive compared to say Austrian resorts, but it is cheaper than Zermatt (next valley over, you can day trip one to the other but it’s a very early bus and train). If money is no object there are some lovely 5* hotels and eateries.

Echo Grindlewald / Wengen are really pretty with absolutely stunning scenery. I really loved it there but a few years since we went.

Flims is nice for skiing - good lifts to mountain restaurants for non skiers to meet with skiers. Goes up to 3000 meters so usually not a problem finding snow and possible to ski the whole 14k top to bottom without a lift. Not particularly "good" shopping although there are plenty of small gift / clothes shops and a big supermarket. Pretty walks through the woods to the lake or Rhine Gorge or you can take a horse drawn carriage. There are hotels with a pool & spa.

Verbier and Zermatt.

Crans Montana
Gstaad

Nendaz, Thyon and Veysonnaz are good alternatives to Verbier.

Saas-Fee is great at Easter when it’s longer warmer days. Christmas can be very cold/short days. The town is sweet but the landscape is on the slopes is quite barren (no trees) and personally I find the faffing with the cable cars a bit annoying (same in Verbier tbh). Not the best resort for beginners, but not sure of your level.
