Good basic ski jacket, salopettes, base layer and socks that will keep him warm (he's 18) but not break the bank! Thanks.

Decathlon is your friend

BellissimoGecko · 14/11/2024 21:35

I've seen the stuff in Decathlon, and Mountain Warehouse has a great sale on.

I was just wondering if anyone had experience of any of the brands that they could recommend.

Decathlon. My family member lives in a alpine resort, most of their clothing is Decat. Decathlon also have their product development site for mountain gear near Mont Blanc.

Radiatorvalves · 14/11/2024 22:03

Another vote for decathlon kit. My boys and I have used it for years.

bestbefore · 14/11/2024 22:08

Socks from Amazon. Base layers M&S thermals
Get good gloves

Clammyclam · 14/11/2024 22:11

Another vote for Decathlon my DS wears their salopettes
They've lasted 3 seasons (I bought the size up) and would buy again
Good value too
He's only 10 though.
Daughter wears quicksilver salopettes (15) if you hunt online you can often find a good discount - they are more investment as she will wear them for longer

Both have been worn in -20 in Canada and with base layers were warm and dry

MissyB1 · 14/11/2024 22:16

My ds is going on his 4th school skin trip this year.
ski jacket was from tresspass,
Salopettes from mountain warehouse
light weight fleeces from mountain warehouse
Gloves, ski socks and beanie Mountain Warehouse

LIZS · 14/11/2024 22:18

Lidl have theirs in this week, good for base layers. TK Maxx are worth a look for discounted brand jackets and generic black ski trousers plus goggles, gloves, socks and hats. Blacks, Mountain Warehouse, Dare2be, , Trespass are all good for affordable skiwear and accessories.

Where's he going and how style aware is he?

Decathlon is fine. Some of the other brands mention could be quite embarrassing for an 18yr old if they care about that. And the quality isn't great but really depends on what level he's at and how often he's going to be going. Mountain warehouse stuff is pretty crap and cheap feeling. Montec/ passenger/ dope are popular cheaper brands. Lots of stuff on vinted that's barely used.

Teen boys tend to be on the slopes in along pullover/ half zip style rather than traditional jacket. Lots of colour, POC goggles. Get a decent helmet with mips tech. Thinnest socks you can get. Thermals from decathlon. Leggings and long sleeves. Then a couple of cheap fleeces unless he's going somewhere very cold like -20.

BellissimoGecko · 15/11/2024 18:29

Thanks, all, v helpful responses, especially @FlingThatCarrot!

He's going to northern Sweden.

He would be fine with Decathlon gear. He's not that style conscious!!

POC goggles. Get a decent helmet with mips tech.

This is like a new language! Will he need a helmet? I guess he will...

Unless you want him in a coma, or worse, if he falls - I’d say he should have a helmet.

DanielaDressen · 15/11/2024 18:32

He will need a helmet, not sure of ski hire places hire helmets…..they do for kids. Not sure about adults.

LIZS · 15/11/2024 18:52

Ski hire shops can hire helmets.

InTheRainOnATrain · 15/11/2024 19:13

You can hire a helmet as part of the package from the ski rental shop. I wouldn’t buy one for a teen beginner on a one-off trip as it might not get used again. He will need Goggles. Giro ones are good value. Again I wouldn’t get anything too expensive.

Re ski wear my teen nephews and nieces wear basic thermals from decathlon (the girls) or no thermals at all just a normal t-shirt (the boys). Whatever random hoodie or jumper. Then ski wear from Quicksilver/Roxy, Helly Hansen or North Face.

FlingThatCarrot · 16/11/2024 10:37

You can get a helmet at the ski hire place but they can be a bit crap looking but if that doesn't bother him then they're perfectly safe. It's very rare to see anyone on the slopes without a helmet these days, they're very lightweight and comfortable.

Goggles need to be a good fit or they just steam up. Face shape really makes a difference so definitely try and get to a shop to try some on. There's lots of good online shops selling last years colours so you could find a style that fits and then buy a cheaper colour online. I've had good experience with Ekosport. And get the a goggle cover- decathlon do one for a couple of quid. The goggles sit on the helmet, helmet gets chucked around and goggles scratch very easily.

Also you want to get him a balaclava/ neck warmer type thing. They stop your face getting cold. Lip balm with an spf. Winter sports suncream- it stays on a lot better than normal stuff and is thicker. If you have any then chuck a tube of deep heat in his luggage as there'll be aches!

Walking boots for the resort as trainers will just get soggy.

BellissimoGecko · 18/11/2024 09:42

@FlingThatCarrot - do you mean one of these? https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/ski-mask-case-b-100-grey/_/R-p-134405?mc=8346640

And is a neck warmer or a balaclava better?

Great tips - thank you :)

OP posts:
LIZS · 18/11/2024 09:59

Neckwarmer. Balaclava might affect the fit of a helmet.

FlingThatCarrot · 18/11/2024 10:35

Neck warmer but you pull them over your chin, some have nose/mouth holes so they can go higher.
I like a buff, fleece for your neck bamboo for your face- similar to this-
www.decathlon.co.uk/p/adult-ski-snood-pink//R-p-170459?mc=8801882&c=green&utm_term=8801882-4856999%2C_n-generic-pros_ts-pro_spd-msp_spu-msp_sp-msp_pt-pb_l-en_BAU&gclsrc=aw.ds&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=gb_t-intbra_ct-shopp_n-generic-pros_ts-pro_f-cv_o-roas_spd-msp_spu-msp_sp-msp_pt-pb_pnl-com_l-en_pp-gads_bm-roa_pr-cpc&network=g&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiA6Ou5BhCrARIsAPoTxrBKr_ftFYCCmmXPcYZxo2BwF8CU1sXBy6MWbklI4E71491ZLEviGhUaAhFFEALw_wcB

Goggle cover is more like a fitted sheet for goggles than a bag as they are attached to your helmet and them you can just put the cover over without taking them off.
I think this is one-

Gogglesoc are the big company that do loads of designs

FlingThatCarrot · 18/11/2024 10:37

Also if you invest in decent gear and he enjoys it then wash it with tech wash to keep it waterproof- nikwax is a good one and just goes in the machine.

localhere · 02/01/2025 19:24

I look for the brand names on the bougie ski sites (TikTok is great for this!) and then search them out on Vinted. You'll get great bargains. Basics can be got from Mountain Warehouse, Amazon, layers from primark

BellissimoGecko · 02/01/2025 22:06

Thank you for all the help ands advice!! Ds has a great time skiing and wasn't cold at all. Result!

Decathlon.
Or eBay. Look out for good gear on there and you can save a fortune
I've bought spyder, didriksons, Columbia.

Also keep an eye on tk Maxx.

Or borrow from a friend.....
