School ski trip

Hi, I have never and hope to never going skiing! My child however is going with school in the new year.

Yes, they've supplied a kit list, but it's vague such as 5 pairs of thermal base layers and 5 jumpers, warm gloves and sunglasses.

Can anyone link me what they'd buy - age 13ish but if I can get links of the right sort of stuff, then I can go off and find the right products/sizings.

Thanks from a totally clueless mum!

Keep an eye out for Lidl and Aldi ski weeks. Their stuff is pretty good.

mine wore:
baselayer leggings
baselayer top
half zip fleece jumper
ski jacket and trousers
helmet
goggles
ski socks
ski gloves or mittens.

to be honest you can get away with just one or two baselayer bottoms, and even get a couple of wears from a baselayer top. I’d prioritise more socks so they are dry every day, over new baselayers for each day!

crumpet · 02/10/2024 13:08

Lidl/Aldi have all of the above, but some of it can go fast.

I should also add waterproof/snow boots. Can get away with walking boots but it does depend on whether they’ll be playing about in deeper snow!

Mountain Warehouse do kids ski packages. The quality is fine, my dc used them when the skied once a year. It also meant that they had all the basics when I didn't know what they needed.

Look on vinted

Trespass or Decathlon should see you right for reasonably priced kit. I agree that 5 sets of base layers (they mean thermals) seems excessive. They might find goggles better for skiing if they'll be wearing a helmet but will also need sunglasses for walking around the resort. I'd shop around on Vinted etc as it's the sort of thing that kids wear for a week and either never go again or outgrow before they go again.

Vinted!!! Borrowing also an option !ask around :)

Rocketstarr · 02/10/2024 13:11

Check out Vinted or Decathlon. I wear socks and base layers twice generally (although don’t get too hot myself), I would take 2 pairs of sunglasses (essential for off the slopes and expensive to replace in resort a pair is lost), 2 beanies, ski gloves and normal gloves for walking around town. I don’t wear snow boots but Vans do a line called MTE which are pretty water and snow proof so I would recommend them. Just normal fleece/hoody is fine as a mid layer. Plenty of sun cream and lip balm. Normal jeans/sweatshirts for off the slopes.

I would get a decent coat second hand from Vinted, new years can be really cold. You can buy most of it from there and then re sell afterwards and it barely costs anything.

ChilliMum · 02/10/2024 13:35

If you have a mountain warehouse or decathlon nearby these are great and not expensive for base layers / ski socks.

Base layers can be reworn especially leggings can do 2 days.

Invest in proper ski socks. Depends on your teen but ski socks can usually do 2 days, I rinse mine in the shower and then leave to dry on radiator For a couple of days and then rewear, my teens just wear 2 days in a row.

A really good pair of ski gloves.

Ski jacket and sallopettes are really expensive try second hand sites / facebook and ask around. Most teens only get one year out of them so second hand are often in really good condition.

https://www.vinted.co.uk/catalog?time=1727871986&catalog[]=2590&size_ids[]=633&page=1

Get separate jacket and sallopettes not an all in 1 as they are a nightmare for the toilet (wet floors as everyone coming in and out in ski boots)

A thin fleece for over base layer and under coat. Thinner the better or you end up like the Michelin man! 1 or 2 max, my teens usually find base layer plus t-shirt is enough.

Just jeans/joggers and hoodie for the evening (can be reworn as really just a couple of hours per day), and non ski socks, it's a relief to put on nice soft socks after a full day on the piste (Oh and a large box of plasters for blisters - get the gel blister ones they are a life saver!)

Sun screen.

Boots, skis, poles and helmets are usually hired as part of the ski package - check you don't need to bring a helmet.

Goggles https://www.decathlon.co.uk/sports/skiing/ski-goggles

Snow boots for outside and trainers for inside.

MrsSunshine2b · 02/10/2024 14:27

If you can afford pure merino wool base layers, she can wear one set for more than one day as it's antibacterial and doesn't gather sweat.

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 02/10/2024 17:44

Thank you thank you thank you Flowers
Due to Covid, it's the first time in a while anyone's been - in fact when my elder child was in the school they didn't get the option, so no one we know to get second hand. Been keeping an eye on Facebook market place but we do have an Aldi, so good shout as well as a Mountain warehouse.

Decathlon or Vinted. Or parents of kids in the year above who hated it and never want to go again.

Blessedbunny · 02/10/2024 18:16

These lists are quite handy. Decathlon good value for sure - they are really helpful as well, just ask them with a budget. They’ll show you the stuff you’ll need.

It’s a lot of fun, your child will get the bug..

I keep saying this: some pocket packs of tissues to keep in jacket pocket (I'm always blowing my nose on the slopes!); and some snacks or mini mars bars they can keep in a pocket as well - send them with plenty.

Proper high factor sun cream for skiing - the regular stuff you buy for the summer won't be sufficient especially on a sunny day - keep it in jacket pocket and reapply frequently, it's very easy to burn in the mountains.

Neck buff to pull up over ears/nose to protect when it's particularly cold or windy, can be worn under helmet as well for an extra layer. I always take a couple of these.

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 04/10/2024 19:54

Thanks you all!

I’ve skied for years and never ever worn base layer bottoms.
I wouldn’t say base layer specific tops are that important, a shirt, a hoodie then a ski jacket would do it! You don’t need loads of specific kit.
I’ve done cross country skiing and I’d wear a base layer then so I could strip down to it.

Whywhwhy · 04/10/2024 20:06

If they are a beginner, they will likely be lower down on the mountain and therefore not as cold. They also spend a lot of time standing around or getting up so end up being too hot quite easily. More advanced groups will move quicker and be higher up, so get cold quicker. I am a teacher who runs a ski trip and often see our beginner groups taking off jackets as they are too hot if the sun is out. I therefore wouldn't worry about different warm layers for every day as if you do get a cold week, they can always re-wear

EmsHugs · 04/10/2024 21:13

As a teacher who has taken a few ski trips, would agree with other posters re Aldi/Lidl/Decathlon even Amazon and TK Maxx.
Depending on how long they are away for they maybe do not need quite the list Skibound give out. We used them as our provider too but gave the following list:
2-3 x tshirt/vest
2 thin long sleeve thermal
2 jumpers/polo neck helps with any windchill. Fleecy material ideal
Ski jacket. Also pack another jacket for them as a number were sent with parents thinking it could double as their outdoor jacket but if it got wet during skiing during he day wasn't that pleasant to wear at night when still damp
2 Thermal leggings/long John's to wear under ski trousers.
1 pair ski trousers
3/4 buffs. These end up wet and pretty disgusting, so I was always suggesting they pack a spare each day to swap over in afternoon and then rinse and dry in evening
2 hats. They always lose hats.
1 pair ski gloves (ideally put in a cheaper back up pair( they always lose gloves too.
1 pair thin nder gloves , ideally the ones with a grip on the fingers/thumb
1 pair goggles . A lot of them lose their goggles too so a pair of sunglasses can be handy to stick in.
Don't forget sunscreen and lip balm.
5x thin socks (not ankle sock)
2-3thick ski socks.
I would also suggest they have a pair of trainers/ shoes with good grip to wear when they are walking about in between wearing their ski boots. We had loads of kids turn up with converse/uggs and they would get wet in the snow and offered no grip
