Best resort if you fly to Turin

Looking to next season, it looks like the cheapest flights at the moment are to Turin. DH is in a budget-conscious mood, so I'm just interested if anyone is familiar with the resorts in the Val d'Aosta. Are there are MNers who live in Turin who are familiar with the various resorts? I've only been to Courmayeur and that was 30 years ago, so for new year where would you recommend? Looking at Via Lattea and Monterosa area preferably, but appreciate that their close proximity to Turin will probably mean they are busy. Anyone?

Depends on your ability as if you are experts there may not be enough to keep you busy, but Pila is a fairly low cost resort and great if you're not an expert.
I went through Pilaski who can organise transfers and everything else for you at probably cheaper than you could do it yourself.

We're booked to go to Cervinia at Christmas, flying to Turin.

@rookiemere Pila looks cute! We're all confident skiers though and I think we'd have skied that area pretty comprehensively by the end of day one Grin

I will look at the others - thanks!

Gressoney is good -gives you easy access to both alagna and champoluc. Another option is If you have a car and stay in Aosta you will have easy access to pila (cable car) cormayeur (30 mins drive) and cervinia (hours drive) a week's ski pass in pila gives you two free days elsewhere in the valley

Montgenèvre usually has the best d ow in the Via Lattea. Serre Che is great and Bardonneccia has had some great write ups recently.

Cervinia is fairly easy from Turin. Big area, especially if you buy the Zermatt pass, but not massively challenging on the Italian side. Swiss side has harder runs

Has anyone stayed in Sestriere? What's it like as a resort?

I’ve skied over to Sestrière. It was ok but snow not as good as Montgenèvre. Am sure others will have better info, but I’d not be tempted to stay there.

I would say that food and coffees tend to be better and cheaper in Italy than France.

We were in Sauze d'Oulx this year. Nice resort and fab town but fairly crappy conditions at half term. Went to Montgenevre for a day and the conditions were so much better. If you're not bothered about too much apres then could be an option to stay Italian side in Sestriere (not very pretty resort) or Claviere and ski to Montgenevre a day or two.
