Esf nursery meals

Have booked in my child for the esf nursery/kindergarten in three ballers as she is 23 months and won’t be able to do snow sports due to age.

ive paid for the lunch option because it gives more childcare time, but they won’t tell me what the meal examples or options are? Does anyone have experience of what food they might serve ?

we are mostly vegan but understand that it might not be fully possible in the French alps so may have to accept vegetarian because I don’t really want her to have some sad lunch.

I'm interested in the answer to this too as I was looking at ESF lunch care for my 9 and 6 year olds, who are both vegetarian...

You need to email the relevant ESF office, they are usually very responsive? France is possibly the worst country at accommodating veggies and vegans - particularly in ski resorts in my experience - so it’s well worth checking directly

I’ve seen the whole week’s menu for the val d’Isere creche last season when I was considering it for DS (ultimately decided against it) but can’t find it anymore, looks like it’s no longer on the website.

From memory it’s typical french kids stuff so a typical day was a starter of carrots frappe, hachis parmentier (Shepard’s pie) for main, cheese course and a yoghurt. No idea if they accommodate veggie, the French are notoriously shit at that particularly in the mountains! If they will you might have to spell out no meat at all and no fish as there’s a common presumption in France that vegetarian and pescatarian are one and the same.

I would be surprised if they cater to vegetarians unless it's an English language branch. I've never heard of a normal day care centre that did veggie

bobomomo · 11/01/2024 15:01

Unless they are catering to British tourists I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't offer a vegetarian option, French are notoriously inflexible with food. I gave up on going on holiday there once dd was veggie after a terrible experience (no language barrier as were with French friends)

Terribletooths · 11/01/2024 15:55

I did ask for a example menu when I first booked it but was met with ‘I don’t know, depends on the chef on the day’

good to know I need to spell out no fish and no meat!!

I thought at least vegetarian would be ok, vegan probably not

You definitely want to call them and check they will actually do no fish, no meat if it’s that important to you so you can decide what you’re going to do if they won’t accommodate. Although the only alternative is probably a private nanny and that’s going to be €€€! Also are you happy to eat cheese? If you want to stick to fully vegan and eat out for lunches you will probably end up having a rather sad pizza without the cheese every day.

ididntthough · 11/01/2024 20:40

Or chips and a side salad… chips and a side salad…

Terribletooths · 11/01/2024 20:54

i may have to relax the vegan thing and she can probably deal with vegetarian options (bit of cheese, yoghurt and eggs etc) but even then would still like to see what a typical meal might look like

but defo not keen on meat or fish for her.

We used an esf creche last week (and have done several times before), although not the one OP asked about. Here is the menu.
They aren't at all flexi with any sort of fussy eaters, or preferences, it's literally this or be hungry Grin. You could send fruit and snacks in with them though.

Of course it’s carottes râpées, there’s me getting confused with a blended coffee drink and calling it a frappe. Sorry! But yes that menu helpfully posted by @skiVC7 looks very similar to the one I saw for Val d’Isere last year so I think it’s very typical of their offering whatever the resort. Not remotely surprised that they’re inflexible though.

Where in 3 vallees? We've used the piou piou in St martin several times. The lady who runs it is really lovely and still recognises DS years on.

Food tends to include meat and veg- but also have spaghetti bolognese and macaroni cheese, but also mashed potato, crozets. I would think the chance of you getting vegan food is pretty small, bit theu should cater vegetarian.

ESF childcare is somewhat run like ESF lessons- it's a bit "suck it up" (as @skskiVC7 intimated) so you may not get a lot of choice. There's always plenty of baguette though 😬

Terribletooths · 12/01/2024 11:25

thank you for the image, it does say vegetarian possible so I’m just going to suck it up and just say she’s vegetarian (no fish or meat)and hope for the best really.

we’ll be at the courcheval one as that one has designated 18mths to 3yrs. Hoping because it’s courcheval, it’ll be more accomoDating on diet but probably not

We are thinking of booking our children (7&9) into to ESF lunch in Méribel. My question is has anyone done this? What are the lunches like? My 2 can be a bit fussy! Also if anyone has done did the children enjoy it?
