any tips to prevent sun burn/sore lips

Last 2 ski holidays one of my kids who is ginger has had very sore lips and then the year after got sore/sun burnt above lips. Uses factor 50+ lotion and factor 50 lip stick, both reapplied diligently. These are just normal kids branded products from supermarket that are fine for summer holidays but not specifically for skiing. Is there something else we should be using/doing? It was hot when we skied so not sure a balaclava type covering would be comfortable. Thanks

Last year there was a really cool group who all had tinted block type lip balm, like cricketers wear. I'm getting that for this year's ski trip.

Have you tried zinc oxide creams?

Otherwise, we always use the Piz Buin Mountain stuff which is made especially for skiing. Never had any burn or chapping. It's handy because it comes in a little tube with suncream and a lip balm on the end all built in so you can pop it in your pocket and top up both during the day.

Use the special skiing products such as Piz Buin - and if possible, keep an eye on how often your child wipes a snotty or dripping nose on a tissue or on their glove, and reapply some cream at every stop or on the lifts if you notice that they are frequently inadvertantly wiping the cream off.

All of the above but also, what about a ski helmet with a peak to create a bit of shade?? And pay attention to seating at lunch so either eat indoors or try and get him sat on the side of table where his back will be in the sun.

Agree with above - you need a high factor cream specifically for skiing, like Piz Buin. Alternatively, there is a brand called Soleil Noir which is widely sold in shops in French resorts which is very good. Make sure everyone has their own tube in a jacket pocket and re-apply frequently, especially on a sunny day.

I usually buy the stuff in resort they have at the ski shop counter. It seems the most effective to me.

You also need to be really on at them to not lick their lips. Explain that it gives temporary relief but ultimately makes them more sore and remind them every time you see that tongue pop out. It's the vicious circle of lip licking which makes it a problem.

"re-apply frequently, especially on a sunny day"

Treat every day as a sunny day. The damaging rays are the ultra-violet rays and these are present even on cloudy days, and get reflected upwards off the snow (which is why a peaked helmet is of limited use). Also, on colder or windy days, the "tissue/glove wipe" I mentioned above very quicky removes the cream.

thank you. we will try buying in resort. it is only 1 of my 4 kids that is affected but they are skiing 9 to 5 although do top up lotion, the other ginger one skis a shorter day.
