Skiing in March?

Hi all, where in Europe is good for skiing/snow the first week of March? I'll be going with my 7-year old who has not skied before. Thank you!

Val Thorens is high and beginner friendly

lizkt · 01/11/2023 13:28

Vast majority of resorts will be great then. Also schools hols are finished so it's the perfect time imo.

Radiatorvalves · 01/11/2023 13:29

Should be perfect conditions then. I’d go for a smaller resort with a pool. Maybe Puy St Vincent, Risoul or Les Orres. Might help to know if you prefer a particular country or have budgetary constraints.

lizkt · 01/11/2023 13:29

If you tell us what you like, we can help. Do you want a cute village? Or high up ski in ski out convenience?

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/11/2023 13:32

most places will be great then so you need to narrow things down a bit more

Flying / driving / train?

catered or self catering?

I assume your dc will be having lessons, what are your plans?

We used to go to Livigno in Italy. Its a long transfer, but due to the distance in the mountains, its duty free! Pre-brexit we used to by camera lenses, electronics, perfume, leather goods, liquors and all sorts. No idea of the rules now though, but there were no checks on the coach etc. Its also high altitude and we've skiied there well into April also.

HardcoreLadyType · 01/11/2023 13:48

A nice place for beginners is Yeilo in Norway, but it’s quite limited for anyone who has skied before.

I always found with our children that they would be in ski school for the morning, but you need to get back to pick them up, so you can’t really go that far afield, so a large resort might not work as well
as you hope. However, by the end of the week, he’s likely to have done some red slopes with his class (they really do progress quickly) so a resort with a bit of variety is good.

Morzine is nice, and should have good snow in March. I wouldn’t want to go earlier in the season, because it is quite low.

Thank you, yes, I should have been more clear! Short transfer and walk to slopes/lift. I prefer somewhere smaller, so not huge resort, not too many people. No preference for country. Don't want to self cater and would like to have the option of a few restaurants/cafes. Budget under £2000. Flying out of London.

DC will be in lessons. I'll be skiiing.

Thank you for all your recommendations.

I used to use the skiclub website to help narrow my choice of resort. If you see some offers on say Neilson/Crystal etc, you can then look them up on the website. Or the other way, to find a smaller resort, ski in/out, beginners etc. You can find info without logging in or being a member too.

2k for the both of you might be tough. Suggest you look on Sunweb who have deals including lift passes. You might get a great deal.

BettyBallerina · 01/11/2023 17:18

I’ve been skiing at Easter in Finland.

Sprig1 · 01/11/2023 17:20

For that budget I would go to Finland.

Rocketstarr · 01/11/2023 18:47

Tignes or Val Thorens to be snow sure and good quality snow.

NorthernSpirit · 01/11/2023 18:52

You’ll need a high resort in March - as it’s almost the end of the European season & getting warmer.

Avoid France - its expensive, the French don’t really want you there & the food is pretty s@it on most mountains.

Highly recommend Austria (somewhere like Ischgl, St Anton) - high enough, great value for money, fabulous infrastructure & the Austrian hospitality is great.

Havanananana · 02/11/2023 09:18

The first week of March should still be OK for snow in the vast majority of resorts. For Austria look at Rauris, Maria Alm, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Leogang or the Wilder Kaiser resorts. All have short transfers from Salzburg or Innsbruck.

Ischgl and St Anton are great resorts, but both are pricey and are far from the best resorts for a 7 year old beginner.

La Rosiere in France might be an alternative, although the transfer from Lyon takes 3 hours or longer.

LakeFlyPie · 18/11/2023 15:02

We've been to Italy at Easter few times. Fantastic snow x2, last year was ski-able but not great. This was April though, March should be fine if you go to a reasonable altitude

stringbean · 20/11/2023 18:17

Be aware that French schools are on holiday until 10th March (not all areas, and not the Paris schools in that week) but it means French resorts will be busier than from 11th onwards.

StaringAtTheWater · 11/12/2023 22:13

Perhaps look at Slovakia OP? Your money will go a lot further there, and Jasna is only 40 mins from Poprad-traty airport. We went at Easter and the slopes were lovely and quiet.

remi1L · 23/12/2023 23:25

Depending on your budget, Avoriaz is good and pretty affordable (plus ski in/ski out), Les Diablarets in Switzerland if you're feeling flush, or pretty much anywhere within 1 hr 30 of Innsbruck (eg. Mayrhofen, Zell am See, Soll etc).

PARunnerGirl · 23/12/2023 23:36

I love La Rosiere, as mentioned by a PP. The transfer is such a pain though, but I put up with it because it has a lovely vibe.

Les Gets this year for us for a change though.
