Dolomites

Has anyone skied in the Dolomites before? We've booked for next Feb and we're really excited!

It is amazing, make sure you buy the Dolomiti superski pass and not your local one.
The Sellaronda is such a great experience. We did it both ways with kids, totally doable but it takes all day, The green one is slightly easier. Make sure to be back with time to spare so that you don't miss the last lift.

So many slopes and lifts to choose from. Out of this world ski experience.

@Maraschina thank you! All noted. It looks amazingly beautiful, we really can't wait. Looking forward to the food too! Where abouts did you stay?

We were in Selva Val Gardena (Wolkenstein) . Where are you staying?

florenceandthemac · 28/04/2023 11:17

We went to Madonna this year, loved it.
Booked for Selva next year

prinnycessa · 28/04/2023 12:21

We're staying in Miramonti in South Tyrol, really looking forward to it!

Yes! We go to the Dolomites a lot. It's my favourite place to ski! We tend to go to the Canazei/Arabba area. The food and coffee on the mountain is to die for. Tends to be quieter than France and less Brits. You'll love it I'm sure!

ReviewingTheSituation · 09/05/2023 16:01

We went to the Dolomites this year (Selva) for the first time, and can't wait to go back. Amazing views, and the skiing suited me perfectly (nice wide slopes, not too busy, nothing intimidating). Loved the Sellaronda, and the James Bond run.

I was hoping for lots of pizza at lunch, so was surprised it was a lot more Austrian influenced than I expected, but I did enjoy the schnitzel!

WellWoman · 16/05/2023 18:41

Just jumping in to say we love it too, and it's much cheaper and friendlier than French resorts.

prinnycessa · 18/05/2023 19:58

@massistar sounds amazing, thank you!

Sounds amazing! @ReviewingTheSituation - we are so looking forward to it. Did you visit anywhere else nearby?

prinnycessa · 18/05/2023 20:03

@WellWoman glad to hear it. It's not hugely popular but so stunning. We're looking forward to the views and the quiet!

Never skied this area before, can I ask what airport you all fly into and what sort of transfer times to resorts?

prinnycessa · 18/05/2023 20:06

We can either fly into Innsbruck or Verona to get to our hotel. We're planning to do a day and a night in either. Which would people recommend?

OP posts:
prinnycessa · 18/05/2023 20:11

@Thunderpunt you have to fly to either Verona or Innsbruck. It's then a 3 hour drive from either

OP posts:
WellWoman · 18/05/2023 20:29

We flew to a Innsbruck and our drive was much shorter - more like 2 hours. Verona is longer - flew in to there the first time we went to Dolomites and it’s not much more than 3 from other main Italian hubs.

A word of caution - it’s not super quiet. Even in late Jan/early Feb the Sella Ronda was very busy.

The surrounding valleys were not busy but that main circuit is so popular I think everyone just feels they have to do it. If I was there in a school holiday period I’d just not do the SR routes. There are masses of other lovely areas to explore.

We call it our fantasy ski are - it’s got everything you’d want if you designed a ski resort from your own ideas. And Bombardinos!

Love it. Sigh.

massistar · 18/05/2023 20:58

We fly into Venice or Treviso.

massistar · 18/05/2023 21:00

Oh and we've never actually done the Sella Ronda tour as you spend too much time on lifts! The run down from Marmolada is fab though.

Thunderpunt · 18/05/2023 21:10

Great thanks for the info re transfers.
In terms of resorts, which have the biggest ski areas from the resort. We normally ski Les Arcs/Paradiski areas so like to have a lot of choice of runs, sometimes find the Italian resorts are just a bit small in terms of number of runs/lifts

prinnycessa · 19/05/2023 07:36

@WellWoman we've decided to go to Verona as we'll get there at 8, can spend the whole day and then make our way to the Dolomites the next morning. Will have a look into trains/coaches

@massistar - great, thanks for the tip!

WellWoman · 19/05/2023 08:57

Adding a day in Verona will be fun. (Go in the summer too, for the opera in the Roman amphitheatre, it's amazing.)

Most of the key resort towns have big valleys of skiing behind them, away from the SR circuit. It's also easy to jump across to the next valley from where you are. We stayed in Santa Cristina this year and skied lots of very empty areas around our village as well as around and west of Ortisei, did the Sella Ronda and spent one day over around Corvara, further east of our base. Decided we'd like to be based in Corvara another time.

N.B. We're enthusiastic but not the fastest or best skiers so I reckon most people can cover a lot of ground there. We loved how much there was to choose from. Also fabulous food and drink and much cheaper than France (ski pass is expensive but you do get a lot for it, and most of the lifts are very fast and impressive)

prinnycessa · 19/05/2023 15:01

@WellWoman thanks! Well DH has never skied and I've only skied once! So we will be in classes in the morning and on the slopes in the afternoon. If we love it we will probably just rebook to go there again! 😂
