To ski or not to ski - just had big row

Ridiculous first world problems row but still...

I want to book a last minute ski holiday in the Easter holidays. Maybe Courchevel or similar. DH says conditions are awful, everyone is cancelling, would be an insane thing to do. I looked at webcams and I see snow! But he is insisting that there is no frozen base so the snow will be gone in days. Says he's spoken to people who have recently returned but won't say which people! Arghghghgh!

So I'm asking you lovely lot - please anyone who has recently been skiing - what are conditions like where you are?

Snow is fantastic is Tignes/Val d’Isere and will be until the end of the season. Pick your resort well! We ski every Easter and have skied in Tignes until May 4th some years and it’s fab.

Coming down on the lift rather than skiing down!

Wow Rainy that's great to hear about Tignes in May!

This is all sounding really encouraging.

Nice! If you fancy Norway for skiing, send me a PM. I'm from UK originally but live over here now. I can help you navigate how to do it here. It's not as popular for tourists as the Alps etc, but our Feb half term and Easter hols is when all the Norwegians go skiing and we stay in Norway ;)

Rhubarb I am going to be using "downloading" in my next ski chat with DH. Favourite new word.

@mmsmatcha

Your thread title reminded me of a bag I got as a gift when I left my old job. Apparently, I talk about it a lot at work.

The bag answers your dilemma anyway.

DH has just returned from 2 weeks in the Stubai Glacier and his comment was less than usual but still loads (it was only 1.5m instead of 2m)

JustAWeirdoWithNoName · 19/03/2023 22:32

Definitely look at Norway! I don't do well at really high altitudes so it's a great low-altitude, snowsure option for Spring skiing. If you haven't already done so, look at the Skistar website for accommodation, lift passes etc.

Havanananana · 20/03/2023 12:05

"I am happy to sit in the mountains with a vin chaud" ... "Currently on the Norway website."

You'll need to take out an additional mortgage and maybe sell a kidney in order to be able to afford a vin chaud in Norway... and drinking while skiing is not really a thing in Norway (and nor are mountain huts with sunny terraces).

JustAWeirdoWithNoName · 20/03/2023 18:59

Having skiied in Norway last Easter weekend and watched swathes of drunken 20-somethings completely ignoring the "don't drink and ski" signs, I can vehemently disagree that drinking and skiing is not a thing in Norway 😅
However, you do have a point about the price

Friends got hack from Val d'Isere on Saturday said it was fantastic conditions. They're snowboarders and said there was soooo much fresh powder.

We're off at the end of this coming week to La Rosiere. Levels at the top have gone from 120cm to nearly 3m over the last ten days or so. We were booked in already but I wouldn't have hesitated to do a last minute booking and in fact I have three friends in separate trips who have gone out to the alps this week who only booked in the last few days.

If you go high you'll have a great time. But it sounds as though your DH just doesn't want to go and is using the conditions as an excuse, because the conditions are the best now that they've been for more of the season.

Snowballed have you been to La Rosiere before? Are you in a chalet? 3m sounds awesome.

No never been to La Rosière before. Usually do bigger resorts but we're with some beginners this time and a smaller resort is easier. We're staying in an apartment, self catering.

Val d'Isere here we come!!!!

Thank you all for your tips and help persuading DH.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 21/03/2023 21:14

Fantastic!

DS is at Snowboxx in Avoriaz this week and great conditions.

Kissedbyfire1 · 21/03/2023 21:17

We got back from Chamonix valley on Sunday. Big dumps of snow last week, best conditions we’ve had for many seasons. A little slushy here and there late in the day but that’s normal for spring.
Beside the point, but I don’t like Courcheval!

Amazing! Great call. LOVE Val d'Isere.

Kids ski clothes - eBay and Vinted for everything. There will be sales on too but stock will be low at this end of the season - I couldn't find ski socks for the kids anywhere in the 12-3 size.

Have an amazing time!

skilikeagirl · 22/03/2023 13:48

Decathlon still have kids' ski socks in 31-34. www.decathlon.co.uk/p/kids-ski-socks-100/_/R-p-310775?mc=8555027
