Snow boots yes or no?

Are they essential? We are staying in La plagne with lots of nearby shops, bars and restaurants. Are snow boots/moon boots required or will a sturdy pair of walking trainers suffice?

Walking boots or similar fine for cleated areas.

Sturdy walking boots will be fine.

I don't ski, just watch. I walk around by the ski school etc in the snow in walking boots... just make sure theybare waterproof.

Walking boots and thick socks are fine for cleared areas. I've also got a pair of North face moon boots for tobogganing.

Trainers are a no no.

Boots are needed - trainers/walking shoes are of no use when there is 25cm of new snow on the pavements as there is here this morning in the Alps (with another 50cm forecast for the next two days).

Once the main snowfall season is over (from about March onwards) then you'll likely get away with trainers, but until then, boots are the way to go.

My DH tried it one year in “walking shoes” he was miserable cold wet feet. He took his walking boots the next time and it was better as he could cover up with snow trousers around his ankles. But if there’s big snow fall you need some form of boots really.

For kids I would definitely say snow boots because they are more likely to be playing in it. I usually wear either goretex merrells (shoes not boots) or Doc marten wintergrip boots.

I love any excuse to wear my fluffy snow boots and even bring them on Easter skiing holidays! DH, on the other hand, only brought converses on our February ski trip a few years ago. They do say that opposites attract...

When are you going? If this half-term then I think walking boots are fine. The footpaths are icy rather than snowy and no snow is forecast in the next two weeks
