Skiing?
Good intermediate skiers looking for a new place to go skiing. We’ve been going back to the same spot the last few years.

looking to go in February… after UK half term.

anyone, any tips? What places have good snow at the moment?

Where do you usually go? Do you have a preference of country? Budget? Will you be flying and is transfer length an issue? Do you prefer a large ski area? How about apres?

Try snowheads forum for good ideas on where.
It will depend on whether you want quiet mature restaurants or lively on slope apres ski
Skiing itself makes no real difference whether you are a family or a couple if all can ski.

Always best to go high for snow certainty. Val d'Isère / tignes is my favourite.

I’d go somewhere which will be a complete nightmare to deal with when the kids come because of multiple flights/spread out areas - eg Summit county in Colorado/crested butte/Jackson.

Because once you start going with kids you need an easy journey and “facilities”.

If you go to France, bear in mind that the French schools have holidays throughout February. The school holidays are zoned and all will be back at school from March 6th, so might be a bit quieter after that.

Pre kids we had lots of trips to Breckinridge which was so much fun but not like a European resort at all!

@ShooshWhoosh

Where do you usually go - and if you like that place enough to have been there several times, are you looking for somewhere similar (but perhaps in a different country) or are you looking for somewhere completely different and for new challenges?

I assume you must be teachers - otherwise why would you go at half term when the slopes are crowded (half term in 2023 falls in the same week across almost all of Europe) and the prices are almost double what they are in January or March?

Hello! I've booked a trip to Soelden in Austria, which I think is a great resort for intermediates. I have a spare apartment available as some friends have pulled out so if you're looking for a holiday I can help! We're going 25th March - 1st April - it's the week before the prices go up for Easter, so hopefully not too busy on the slopes. Soelden is high and also has a glacier so no danger of lack of snow. You'd have to book your own flights but can jump on our transfers if your flight times fit ours. You'd have a self-contained apartment so could have as much or as little to do with our group as you wanted! Please let me know if you're interested. 😃

Depending on your definition of good intermediate (as in do you ski on pistes or not) my favourite places are

Switzerland- Andermatt
France - Chamonix
Austria - Ischgl or St Anton

Andermatt probably my favourite out of all those but it's not for the faint hearted (although last time I was there at least 10 years ago)

We're in the Dolomites as a couple at the moment and loving it.
It's perfect for a couple as you can ski loads of linked areas and really cover some ground. Would be hard to do with kids (if they were in ski school or would be stressful getting back in time - on your own you have plenty of time as the lifts close late). Also harder to do in a big group where people want to do different things/ go to different places.
Can't recommend it highly enough.

We like Switzerland - Les Diablerets, Isenau, Gstaad, Villars - good apres. & also Canada - Whistler/ Blackcomb. There are some great flights ATM - but no night skiing so early apres.

bluetongue · 02/02/2023 17:14

I’m in Zermatt at the moment and it’s wonderful. Perfect for good intermediates. I’ve managed to do all the blacks here because they’re groomed and not super busy.

Another vote for the Dolomites. We have just been as a group of two couples. amazing ski area, stunningly beautiful, lots and lots of different pistes to choose from, people are really welcoming, food and drink are great and it's cheaper than France. And you get to drink Bombardinos!
We decided we'd go back and base ourselves in Corvara next time - we were in San Cristina for this trip.

ReviewingTheSituation · 13/02/2023 19:40

Ahhhh - the Bombardios. Take me back...

CruCru · 19/02/2023 14:59

I love Zermatt. I've also been to Courmayer but only for a weekend - perhaps it isn't big enough to amuse you for a week.
