Morzine - any comments?

I am booking a ski holiday to Morzine in March and have never been so would love to know what people think of it as a resort (good or bad). The adults all ski well but it's our first return to skiing post-kids!

It's 2 couples with 3 kids aged between 10 months and 2.5 years. Our chalet is 15 mins from the lifts but the chalet hosts will drive us to and from the slopes each day and there is in-chalet childcare.

Any thoughts on what to do/not to do with the kids, thoughts on travel, eating out etc welcome!

Oooh, I've been there (twice), but it was pre-kids and a long time ago, and I couldn't really make any reliable recommendations...

First time I remember there wasn't much snow, but you can go up to Avoriaz which is much higher and more reliable.

My main memory is sitting with a vin chaud outside Le Tremplain watching DH repeatedly coming down the red "for the last time"

Thanks anyway! Sounds like it was not a bad experience, at least!

all good - we'll be going near there next week for the 2nd time and i'm very excited. it's not the most exciting skiing i've ever experienced but it's more about the kids and just enjoying the holiday post-birth, isn't it? have fun!

thanks! if anyone has used the childcare company based in morzine called Cheeky Monkeys it would be great to know how you found it.

We went with Esprit in March 10 years ago. I remember it being a lovely little town with lots of nice craft shops and some cosy restaurants and cafes. I also remember having to go up to Avoriaz as Morzine itself was all spring sunshine and flowers! Avoriaz is peculiar - you can see it from a distance but all the buildings have been cleverly designed to blend in with the mountain peaks so it doesn't stand out too much. There was also some snow on the other side of the valley at Les Gets (not sure if it's north facing???), though it was slushy at the bottom. We've just booked for the Pyrenees in early April - should be interesting (water-skiing, anyone?)

Can't comment on childcare as Esprit provided it when we went.

I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Lovely resort and great traditional french feel - have been about 5/6 times now and would go back year after year....not ever been with kids but it is popular with kids so I suspect well set up for them.

Are these in-winter ski resorts busy in the summer? I can't work out if they are heaving, or ghost towns in the summer?!

For eg, Morzine is meant to have a water park with Olympic-sized pool. Sounds great, but not if over-run by Parisians (or Brits ha ha!)!!................

hiya,
sorry to hijack your thread, but i'm hoping to book a weeks snowboarding in Morzine in March too. We have friends going there the same week but they're all childless, damn them! so we've decided to try and find somewhere to stay that will be ok for us and our 2yr old ds. if anyone can recommend companies/places to stay it'd be ace. thanks x

We went to a ski resort last summer not far from Morzine (Chatel) as my sis has an apartment there. It was lovely. Gorgeous scenery, lots of cable cars open, lovely restaurants and quite a bit tourist wise to see and do. You will need a car though.

Personally I think Les Gets is nicer than Morzine - you can ski between the two very easily. It's smaller and more familyish IMO

OliviaMumsnet · 12/02/2008 18:18

Stayed with friends there a couple of years ago and we drove up to Les Gets iirc but depends when in March you're going. We were at the end of March and snow was DREADFUL - sheer slush and no fun at all. More time for raclette and hot chocolate though

CountessDracula · 12/02/2008 18:29

The year we were there the snow was amazing

It is pretty low though
I would go somewhere higher at that time

alibubbles · 12/02/2008 18:34

Which Chalet are you staying in? We have stayed in Morzine many times, and just outside Morzine.

Apparently this is one of the best years for snow, so you should be okay, last year was pants!
