Dolomites

Can anyone recommend a good base for a week in the Dolomites? We'd like to ski without needing to bus to lifts, and like access to a good number of runs.
It's just me and DH, and we're intermediate skiers.

Did you want to do the Sella Ronda / Superski area or are you looking for a good resort in its own right in the Dolomites area? For the main circuit I think Arabba and Corvara are a good bet. Places like Cortina, Kronplatz and Civetta are more their own mid size resorts.

You do need to be a bit careful in Dolomites because quite a few resorts sell themselves as being part of the main circuit but they are not always that well connected.

I think we'd like to do the Sella Ronda. Thinking about Selva or Corvara. I've read that Kronplatz isn't quite as spectacular (scenery wise) as other places.

Yes Kronplatz is a little unusual as most of the skiing is off the top of one mountain, so it's not hugely varied, and you don't feel you can do so much exploring in lots of different valleys. It's a great resort for practicing technique though as plenty of wide runs. It doesn't have quite as many spectacular views of the amazing dolomite peaks as some places, but still pretty impressive. Some great views from San Vigilio side over to Alta Badia though!

Corvara def a great option. Not the cheapest though!

Corvara is great but pricey. We're in Alba di Canazei at the moment. 2 mins walk to lift which takes us on to the Sellaronda circuit and access to massive ski area.

The Dolomiti Superski network is absolutely massive, the biggest in the world I would think. 475 chairlifts/gondola/T-bar/cabins, you get everywhere without the need to take a bus because everything is connected in a mind blowing way.
The Sellaronda is amazing. I prefer the green one to the orange one. Very easy to follow the signs. Selva Wolkenstein is a good starting point and there are tons of restaurants. Food is great in villages and on the slopes. You have three arriving points in the village, so you are never far from your hotel.

We have booked Selva - 2 weeks tomorrow. Can't wait!

Lovely!
We stayed in Selva a few years ago and were knocked out by the whole experience - great ski area, and lovely vibrant restaurants, bars and so on. Also very beautiful scenery. We're headed back out there soon, staying in San Cristina this time.

Fab OP! You'll love it. We took some friends who are avowed Francophiles to the Dolomites for the first time and they were very impressed. The people are friendly and the coffee and food on the mountain are to die for and very good value!
