Packing for skiing - what evening clothes do I need??

We are off to Tignes tomorrow. It will be the first time in a very long time we've not been catered chalet or half board, so actually going out to dinner each night. No DC and some of the restaurants I've booked us look a bit naice.

I've always struggle with non-skiwear dress code at ski resorts and I am definitely not young and cool anymore. So - experienced ski resort-goers - what is your go-to resort apres/evening wear?

Can I get away with jeans and a jumper or do I need something a bit fancier?? Are snowboots acceptable everywhere??

I should point out that I sincerely doubt we will be going to any rowdy bars after dinner but I guess you never know...

Waterproof leather boots like Ariat, Grenfell or Dubarry are popular. Or snowboots like Pajar or Sorel are fine in most places. Nice wooly cashmere type jumpers, black jeans and good jewellery will be fine. Tignes isn't that posh compared to say Courchevel or Verbier.

Mincepieeyes22 · 26/12/2022 17:56

I will pack a nice top just in case and /or sparkly jumper with black jeans or wide legged trousers if we go somewhere nice like the bar in the 5* hotel (we go to Switzerland - not Verbier). Jeans and a jumper works if we go to the local restaurants where most people seem dressed down.

Snowboots are fine if there's snow on the ground in the resort or if not I prefer to wear leather boots or black trainers.

SkiFan · 26/12/2022 18:03

Thank you both, that's reassuring! I like the combo of jumper, jeans and good jewellery Grin And good that Tignes isn't too posh. We went to Val many years ago but again were catered so only went out either straight from the slopes or after dinner to rowdy bars I was also young and didn't care so I wasn't sure what to expect from Tignes.

I saw someone yesterday wearing a leather two piece suit and wedge heeled yellow trainers but most people are a bit more casually dressed.

schoolworries22 · 26/12/2022 22:02

I've worn a sparkly jumper with jeans and a cashmere jumper with jeans both with a silk cami under which in a pinch works as a top if it gets hot

SkiFan · 26/12/2022 22:29

That sounds like a fab combination @schoolworries22
Are you in Tignes atm? What's the snow like? Leather two-piece sounds interesting!

Last week... jeans and a fleece. Looked normal.

schoolworries22 · 27/12/2022 00:46

No not tignes but port du soleil. Maybe a bit more casual here but depends on the week too.

pollina · 27/12/2022 05:20

Tignes is not posh at all in my experience, those types tend to prefer Val d'Isere! But I've been to both and honestly you can wear anything. Sweater and jeans fine. Never noticed anyone giving my jewellery the once over either Wink

SkiFan · 27/12/2022 06:15

Thanks everyone! I think I'm all set. Will report back in case it's useful!

Have a fabulous time

Littlepiggyinablanket · 27/12/2022 10:31

Please report back? Going to Bardonecchia in Italy, is this less posh than France?

Ultravox · 02/01/2023 22:42

I was in Bardonecchia last year and it was pretty casual. I wore black jeans, cosy jumper & snow boots to every restaurant & didn’t feel out of place.

Littlepiggyinablanket · 03/01/2023 00:09

@Ultravox@Ultravox did you enjoy Bardonecchia? I can't find much info on the resort, we're complete beginners with a 9 & 10 year old!

Lemonyfuckit · 03/01/2023 11:13

@schoolworries22 how was the snow in Porte du Soleil? Going to Morzine on Sunday and worried there is none...

schoolworries22 · 03/01/2023 13:08

@Lemonyfuckit there were lots of runs closed but the artificial snow was giving blues and a few reds cover so there was skiing to be done. Albeit it looked rather green everywhere. More snow arrived in Avoriaz a couple of days ago and I'm told there's more on the way this week.

SkiFan · 03/01/2023 16:18

As promised, reporting back on resort eveningwear!

Jeans and a nice jumper with snowboots very much the norm everywhere, regardless of how naice the restaurant. I took a slightly fancier outfit just in case (blazer, dark top, trousers) which I didn't wear, it wasn't needed.

Saw a few v v casual (think hoodies) which didn't really fit in. But all the suggestions from PP above bang on. Nice jewellery an optional bonus Grin Thank you so much everyone!

Enjoy the snow those of you still to go!

Really enjoyed Bardonecchia. We were adult beginners & looking for a cheap introduction to skiing. Quite a small ski area for beginners & not all runs open so after learning the ropes on the nursery area we stayed on the same few blue runs all the week. There were some lovely (and great value!) mountain restaurants we could easily get to though!
Really liked the town itself too - it’s obviously a resort but it seemed quite down to earth. We self-catered and there were excellent shops, delis & restaurants too. Have fun!
