Please recommend place to combine Ski/City Break

I want to go skiing in February half-term (with DH and 2 pre-teens) but DH’s ageing body can’t stand up to a full week!
As a compromise I’d like to combine a family friendly ski area with a city break (preferably we fly in and out of) - somewhere with a bit of sightseeing (not too many churches), a nice hotel with a pool and bonus points for a famous football stadium where we can see a match (or do a stadium tour).
I wondered about Turin or Salzburg but have not been to either (and not skied Italy/Germany/Austria).
Please let me have any suggestions.
Thanks

stay in vienna. lovely cakes.
many ski places reachable from there.

I'm not sure whether you're looking for a city / ski holiday or a 2 centre break. If the later most entry points are a city particularly outside France.
Some options
Munich (football) and either Garmisch or cross the border to Austria.
Turin not sure about Juve and Torino Stadiums and Milky Way or Aosta Valley
Milan (Football) most of northern Italy though less convenient.
Verona or Venice and the dolomites.
Barcelona (football) and Andorra or Spanish Pyrenees
Grenada and Sol E Neve
Nice and Isola 2ooo
A bit left field, Rome and Roccaraso in the Abruzzo Mountains. I have done it and really enjoyed it though if you wanted lessons English wasn't widely spoken.
For a city:
Innsbruck has a number of ski areas within the city boundary and more resorts within 30 mins by train
Salzburg has resorts within 30 0 60 mins
Aosta is a lovely small Italian city with direct gondola access to Pilla
Bardonechia is a working Italian town with reasonable access to Turin.
Saux d'oulx you can take the bus down to Oulx in the valley and quick train to Turin

Sierra Nevada Spain and Malaga and/or Granada.

It's completely possible to be on the ski slope one day and on the beach the next. Plus both Malaga and Granada are both worthy of a city break in their own right.

We did this - 4 days in Zell am See skiing, 3 days in Salzburg. Train in between them. Zell is good for non skiers.

Or you could do Turin/Sauze d'Oulx - easy train between the 2 (taxi the last 3 miles from Oulx). That would tick the football stadium box (Juventus, I believe).

Fly into Salzburg and choose any resort nearby - Zell am See, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Maria Alm, Bad Gastein. If you can tear yourself and the kids away from the slopes spend the last day(s) in Salzburg.

A few things to note:

Ski school usually starts on Sundays, and the classes fill up quickly at half-term (it is half-term all over Europe) so you need to book lessons in advance and be in resort ready to start on Sunday.

Football in Europe has a winter break. E.g. Red Bull Salzburg are playing their first home match after the break on Friday 10th Feb, but that is probably the day before you arrive.

Public transport from any of the resorts above to Salzburg is easy - by bus or train - or consider a taxi (about €180 one-way). If travelling with a tour company (Crystal, TUI etc) remember to tell the rep that you're leaving the resort early and will make your own way to the airport for your return flight.

Don't go to Vienna. There is not much skiing on that side of Austria and what there is will be mobbed. Fly to Salzburg or Innsbruck instead.

Turin, Saltzburg, Munich as above. Or Vancouver or Salt Lake City if you fancy a bigger trip.

Munich and then skiing.

I actually bumped into a friend on the same flight to Munich as me, when I was going for a city break and she was going for a long weekend skiing.

Lots to do in Munich and not really churches.

How about Lyon? Great city, fantastic restaurants and easy access to ski resorts.
I love Courmayeur in Italy. Chic town with great skiing, food and scenery.

Gurraun · 27/10/2022 20:55

Oh amazing- loads of options to investigate. Thanks 🙏

Zermatt for skiing. It is a proper mountain resort with trains and sightseeing walking trails and loads to do if you don't ski. Really expensive though.

massistar · 27/10/2022 21:03

Fly into Venice and go to the Dolomites!

WeWantBoo · 28/10/2022 00:31

Andorra and Barcelona or Girona

Loads of ski resorts near Annecy

SeaToSki · 28/10/2022 00:32

Boston and then ski in New Hampshire, Vermont or Maine

I was coming to suggest this. Malaga has a football team/stadium.

Lyon. Great city, huge choice of skiing. Can fly or train. Also Grenoble but no football.

RhubarbFairy · 28/10/2022 21:28

Salzburg will get you to skiing at Zell am See and the Kaprun area in an hour by train. But you'd be better off doing half the week in the ski area and the other week in a hotel in the city

We spent a weekend in Vienna at the end of a ski break a couple of years ago. Ours was borne of necessity because of a cancelled flight, but actually it was an amazing way to end our trip. We were in the ski resort near Salzburg Saturday to Saturday and then did Saturday to Monday in Vienna (2 hours by train from Salzburg).

RhubarbFairy · 28/10/2022 21:29

Also, you can go see Rapid Wien in Vienna.

pollina · 28/10/2022 22:26

Courmayeur/Turin is a good combo. It’s a really fun resort and perfect for less than a full week (unless you are strong off piste).

bestbefore · 21/11/2022 14:05

Good luck finding a flight to Salzburg for Feb half term!

Travelbug72 · 26/11/2022 23:14

Barcelona and drive to Formigal?

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 26/11/2022 23:17

Quite! I am in Munich as we speak. I have seen so many people going around with skis and snowboards this weekend! The direct train is an hour into Salzburg from here.

Also, Munich is fricking awesome!
