December in Switzerland but not to ski?

Due to disability can’t ski, nor get public transport so either need a hire car or to take ours. Would love to go to somewhere snowy/wintery but have no idea where to start. Would be a delayed honeymoon so just 2 adults. It doesn’t have to be Switzerland, someone where we can go for the views etc and not to do activities.

Do you want to be able to drive up the mountain or can you access the cable car or mountain train with support if you can drive to them?

Havanananana · 14/10/2022 18:53

You've started with the most expensive place, and possibly the place with the least to do for non-skiers!

Look at Austria or Italy for snowy places at a more affordable price and where there is more to do. What activities would you like to do?

NoSki · 14/10/2022 21:34

@RhubarbFairy accessing cable car or train would be doable as presuming driving would be difficult.
@Havanananana I’m completely clueless about where to go and would happily take any suggestions

How about Lake Bled in Slovenia? Stunning scenery.

NoSki · 14/10/2022 21:43

Thank you, I will take a look. Any accommodation recommendations?

It’s not cheap but you could go up the Jungfraubahn. Stunning views but I’m not sure there’d be enough to do for more than a weekend.

Agree - have a look at the Jungfrau region.

It's very much geared up for skiers, but if you're OK with short train rides and cablecars, then you could stay in Lauterbrunnen and go up both sides of the valley (Jungfrau one side, Schilthorn the other)

Or stay in Murren (Schilthorn side) which I think is nicer than Wengen, but there's not that much to do if you don't ski (walks, snowshoeing, skating, various exercise groups, massage/spa type stuff, swimming pool inc outdoors jacuzzi)

What is it that attracts you to Switzerland? It's going to be v v expensive at the mo, and you might find what you're looking for elsewhere. I say that as someone who lives in and loves Switzerland 🇨🇭

RhubarbFairy · 14/10/2022 22:17

I was also going to suggest the Jungfrau region based on the train.

How are you on snow once you're off the cable car? As there's resorts you can go to where the cable car takes you almost to the restaurant for coffee and views, but you will need to negotiate snow first.

Austria is absolutely beautiful if you're not set on Switzerland.

Hbh17 · 14/10/2022 22:19

I love Switzerland but it is (currently) incredibly expensive - exchange rate not helping.

How about a hot spring/thermal spa hotel in Austria, in a valley surrounded by gorgeous snowy mountains?

I can recommend Aqua Dome! www.aqua-dome.at/en/

NoSki · 14/10/2022 23:35

Not set on Switzerland at all. Just went when little and remembered how beautiful it was. Happy with mountains and snow anywhere. Can do short distances on snow not ice, have an electric wheelchair.

I've done some googling and La Plagne in France seems to keep coming out top for disability access. Most of the articles I've read focus on ski accessibility, but I thought it was worth sharing from an accommodation accessibility POV. Having not been to La Plagne I can't comment on the views and prettiness though.

NoSki · 16/10/2022 00:34

Thanks, that’s really useful and I really do appreciate that

December is quite early in the ski season. Although there will plenty snow up high on the mountains you may find there isn't any down in the resort, in case that snowy vibe is important to you

BalmyBalmes · 16/10/2022 00:43

La Plagne is big on ski-ability but it's purpose built and lacks charm!
