Recommendations for short break in Italy

Hi I am thinking of taking my teenage son skiing in January before school restarts for about 5 nights. I am thinking Italy as an option as France is getting so expensive. He is a beginner although has skied once and thinks he's amazing! I am intermediate.

Can anyone recommend a resort? I've only ever been to Sauze D'oulx in my 20's which was non stop party resort! Shortish transfers preferred and good English speaking tuition for my son essential. Many thanks

As almost 36 hours have passed and nobody has responded, perhaps there are not too many options in Italy (or those who know are keeping the information to themselves).

So perhaps look elsewhere. Austria certainly has short transfers (60-90 mins and no winding roads or hairpin bends - and often rail transfers) from both Innsbruck and Salzburg airports to a huge number of resorts. Good, English-speaking instruction is guaranteed. Austria (apart perhaps from St Anton/Lech/Zurs and Kitzbuhel) is also less expensive than France. Look at Zell am See, Zell am Ziller, Saalbach-Hinterglemm, or small places such as Leogang, Maria Alm, Rauris, Westendorf, Hopfgarten ... there are dozens of nice places.

Courmayeur in Italy would be an excellent option for your short break. Very short transfer, lots of Brits visit so good English speaking tuition from either ski school there. The resort is quite small (75km of piste) although has some lovely runs and importantly the size means they are very open to bookings of less than a week. There are enough blues for the first day or so and plenty of reds to progress to. Food is also super. It has a reputation as quite a fancy resort but there are some good value hotels.

Italy is very doable for a short break, I have done it a number of times. The main difficulty with short breaks is you don't fit into a standard transfer.
Depending on where you are starting from you may want to mix and match arrival and departure airports to get more time. I skiing eg arrive in Turin return from Milan.
I've looked at mid to late Jan and car hire is prohibitive so you may need to look at public transport options.
When did you go to Sauze I was there about 10 years ago and it has calmed down from its previous reputation. Sauze and Bardoneccia are easily to do by train from Turin or Milan but can lack early season snow. Pilla by Aosta is another option. Stay up the hill or in Aosta and take the gondola up daily. its maybe a bit more snow sure. The Dolomites are trickier by public transport. Ponte Legano / Passo Tonnale may be doable but its a multi change trip.
AS PP has said Austria has good options fly into Innsbruck or Salzburg and Ski Welt / Ski Amade resorts are within 30 - 60 mins train. Innsbruck has sking within the city boundary.
Another lower cost alternative would be Andorra, lots of flights to Barcelona and several coaches a day run direct from the airport to the resorts. Val Nord is quieter than the Pal de la Casa area. It will tick you boxes for good English speaking instruction. Andorra travel service are British owned Andorra based very helpful and you can book as little or as much as you want through them.

I agree with pp. Both Aosta and Milky Way would suit. Pila, La Thuile or Sestriere, Claviere, Sauze d'oulx all offer good beginner skiing and you should be able to find your way there from Turin. I'd add Montgenevre to your list, although it's technically in France but joined to the Milky Way resorts. It's perfect for beginners, very convenient village layout, good ski schools.

Thank you all, I have been looking at Pila, Sestriere, Bardonechia and La Thuile with Crystal ski. They so a 5 day package to Turin at the beginning of Jan. Pila looks great but thinking it might be a little too quiet? I would like to be able to enjoy a bit of apres and maybe go out to eat one evening rather than stay in the hotel.

If you want more lively options in the evening, then stay in Aosta and get the cable car each morning to ski up at Pila. Aosta is a lovely town with cobbled streets and some great bars/restaurants.

We did a short break last season to Courmayeur - Sun to Wed. Skiing was great, definitely enough for a few days.

I see you mentioned Rauris in your second post. We really liked it there (and are going again at Christmas). It's an hour by train from Salzburg and then a short taxi from Taxenbach-Rauris Station (about 15 minutes).

We loved Alghero which is on the island of Sardinia

Sorry just realised you said Resort! Ignore my comment

If it's cost you're worried about more than location, have you looked at www.skiweekender.com/dates-prices/short-ski-weekend-break-prices-2022-2023 ?
