Driving back from the Alps to Calais - where to stop?

Any suggestions for a good overnight stay half way between the Alps and Calais in April? With 2 tween DC and DH.
Looking for somewhere to stop overnight about 3-4 hours from Calais so we have a shorter drive the next day.

Thought of Beaune but not quite far enough. Possibly Troyes. Any recommendations? Thank you

Troyes seems a natural stop, I can't remember specific hotels we've stayed at but the normal budget motel type chains are all there

Where in the Alps are you? We are stopping in Dijon after spending time in Turin, but that's probably not going to ge close enough to Calais for you. Could you get to Reims? That's a great city!

Cyclingforcake · 27/02/2022 19:38

We always stop in Reims.

Sgtmajormummy · 27/02/2022 19:47

From N. Italy we did either Reims or Troyes.

We stayed here last August - www.chateaudeclermontlesfermes.com

It was so charming - family run, lovely food and such warm hospitality. Then about 2.5 hours to Calais the following morning

Thanks for all the suggestions! We’re going to be in Serre Chevalier.
Considered Dijon but would prefer to get closer to Calais. Have visited Reims before so looking for somewhere new!

Should also have mentioned that we are stopping at Macon on the way there, which we’ve done before, so looking for somewhere different on the way back.

Troyes and Reims are good.

Chaumont has a lovely aqueduct (viaduct?) And is 5hours drive from Calais and pretty much en-route if you go via Reims. Small town but very picturesque.

Keladrythesaviour · 27/02/2022 21:54

Alternatively you could go a little out of your way and go to Nancy. It's 5.5hours from Calais but a great little city.

Troyes is a lovely little town. The Ibis budget on the edge of town is good if you don’t want too much faff ( there’s restaurants nearby).

If you want to enjoy the town stay at the red Ibis, or the Mercure if you are posh and go for a wander and a lovely meal. I like L’Illustre just off the main square.

Do not under any circumstances stay in the Ibis budget in the town centre. It’s dreadful and you’ll be up all night listening this youthful moped joyriders.

Coming back to thread to say that we ended up changing plans a bit. Stopped in Beaune on the way there - lovely weather and nice town - sat outside for dinner.
On the way back we ended up having some business in Paris so we stayed there for a night and walked around for a bit before driving to Calais. Got stuck in Eurotunnel delays so it was a late night getting home but a great trip all in all.

Saving up some of these suggestions for next year!
