Ok so no replies to Filzmoos but has anyone been to the above resort and have any feedback. We are all beginners and are looking for a resort that is not too Wizzy with great skiers flying around.
thanksx

Do you mean Grindelwald?

I haven't skied there, but I have been oop the Eiger (well, the Jungfraujoch) on the train from there, which I would definitely recommend. At the top there is a huge steel observatory which is straight out of James Bond, there are zip wires in the snow, tobogganing, huskies to pet etc. The train ride is VERY expensive (I think it was about £60 each!) but it's worth doing. I think they do family tickets too.

Have a look here for loads of info on the area

Never heard of Filzmoos, sorry!

You mean Grindelwald ? Lovely area(picturesque, quaint, mountain trains and local excursions if you don't fancy skiing etc) but you may find the beginners slopes a faff to reach especially if snow isn't at village level (might be now but not always reliable). There were plans to build a furnicular up to the village slopes from the main street, not sure if it has happened yet though.

Filzmoos we have passed through en route to Schladming I think , many moons ago . Was linked to another resort , low altitude but probably fine for beginners/inrtermediates especially since snow is good in Austria this year.

That area is ideal for beginners - there are many gentle easy pistes in switzerland and it is one of the most beautiful areas of the Alps without a doubt. So much more pleasant to be in than France's 3 valleys etc.

I think anyone would love it. Great for a family trip I would have thought.

Snow should be good everywhere this year too...

wengen itself is lovely to stay in too, if you want to look at other options in the area...

LIZS · 30/12/2007 10:40

For a beginner I'd recommend Muerren over Wengen , easy slopes more accessible from village. Grindelwald greta for non skiing though.

we were in grindelwald a few weeks ago and luckily it was snowing even then. You can take a train to the best slopes, like kleine scheidigg, but it is not cheap. No slopes in Grindelwald itself. There is a ski school in grindelwald that also hires out all the gear. Murren is wonderful but no cars up there, very high, only accessibly by train and cable car. Have fun!

Takes ages to get to the slopes from Grindelwald village. Nice village but I seem to remember it takes at least 1/2 hour to get from village to first run - I think they have the longest cable car in europe (and oh boy is it long when your hubby leaves his gloves in the car and has to go back down - nuff said.)

I'd reccommend Lech (well go for Oberlech - it's up the mountain from lech, carless, ski in ski out, and great toboggon run for kids).

We used to go to Grindelwald for family camping/walking in the summer when I was little in 1970s. Very pleasant.

I once made the mistake of going in the winter when I was about 20 with a girl I was trying to impress. There was only one walking path open. Place was full of braying tossers in overpriced ski-gear. Should have known better, really...

Whatever you do, please make sure to pronounce it Grindel-VALT like the Germans/Swiss do and not Grindel-WALLED like the Yanks.

Oh and Morzene in France is great too - lots of skiing - varied terrain.

Courcheval (france) is good - lots of slopes, obergurgl (Austria) nice and quiet.

we also rally liked Aspen (colerado) although very high hubby got altitude sickness...

Not keen on heavenly (tacky too many casinos), whistler (too low - rain and fog), grindelwald (too far to slopes), hinterstoder (austria (too small, not for beginners)

Lech is in Austria by the way - I can recommend Hotel Murmeli, best food anywhere!)

Thanks for all your replies. We have now booked mayrhofen in Austria. Please only post if positive. Know it is quite lively but have chosen lovely hotel and having private ski lessons as had group ski lessons last year and our group were very miserable and they made me very nervous especially when I got left behind!
