Anyone been to Sierra Nevada (Spain)?

We’re looking at booking for half term as the flights / euro tunnel to the alps are ridiculously expensive.

Anytime been?

What did you think? Is there enough to keep a family of 4 with 2 teens (all competent skiers) happy for a week?

What about supermarkets, eating out etc? Reasonable or expensive? Is there a public swimming pool, in the main town?

Thanks for any thoughts.

@Muchtoomuchtodo please could you let me know, did you go to Sierra Nevada in the end? If so, how was it? We might go next year

Just arrived! Remind me in a week and I’ll fill you in.

Got back safely!

We flew into Malaga and it was an easy 2 hour drive - there was no snow on the roads so that definitely helped.

We stayed at the bottom end of town about 5 minutes (slow) walk to the 2 gondolas - the resort is built on a steep hill and I think staying higher up would be really inconvenient with kids. All of the shops, bars etc seemed to be in 2 squares at the bottom of town.

They’re short on snow this year so not all runs were open but they’ve invested heavily in snow making and were keeping what they had in good condition. It snowed up on the mountain the night that we left - it fell as rain in town. It certainly wasn’t cold and the conditions were very spring like - it made it easy for our friends with younger kids - not having to worry about layering them up and tucking everything in. There is a big cafe area at the top of the bubbles with a few different take away food places but not many other places on the hill. We took picnics several days as it was so warm and pleasant to eat in the sunshine! There is a dominos pizza place on the mountain which the kids were thrilled about!

There are loads and loads of different ski schools and kit hire shops. We booked with English ski school and the instructors were great. We organised lift passes and kit hire with them too.

Lift queues often looked big but moved quickly and they were very efficient at filling each chair. Gondolas were one per group and masks had to be worn - this was strictly enforced.

There is no public swimming pool. I think you can pay to use one in a hotel but we didn’t bother. There’s a big metal toboggan run which the kids said was fab and sledging on the bottom of the 2 pistes that come into town at the end of the day is great fun. You can hire sledges.

There is no big supermarket, loads of small ones though. Eating out was easy and about €120 for a family of 4 to have 2 courses with wine (kids have adult meals now). Masks have to be worn in shops and restaurants until you’re seated.

We booked it this year as the prices were so much more reasonable than the main Alpine destinations and no advance testing to go made it pretty stress free.

Shout if there’s anything else you’d like to know!

Hi @Muchtoomuchtodo
Thanks so much for coming back with an update. We are looking to go last minute for Xmas this year. I was wondering if you could clarify what you mean when you say the bottom of town and that being easier? Is that near the Mirlo Blanco kind of end?
We have quite small children so would be looking to make it easier on us.
Glad you enjoyed your break though. That's reassuring 😬

Muchtoomuchtodo · 02/11/2022 09:50

That wouldn’t be a bad spot. Right by the sledging and toboggan track. A short uphill walk to the lifts in the morning- you really need to get one of the gondolas up in the morning - all of the ski schools seem to meet up there.
we stayed in some apartments next to the hotel Mont Blanc and it was about a 5 minute walk to the lifts.
