Buggy question

frillseeking · 26/01/2022 18:11

Taking DS who will be 2 skiing with us and tried to hire a mountain buggy but nothing available. Would a normal pushchair be ok? Never taken children skiing before so wasn't sure!

In lots of places, particularly Austria is where I've seen them, you could just hire a sledge that he sits on?

frillseeking · 26/01/2022 19:25

Yes was definitely going to get a sledge but was just thinking about walking around town etc I've read that the snow can ruin the wheels but I'm not sure how true this is!

What kind of pushchair have you got OP?

frillseeking · 26/01/2022 20:42

I've got a yo yo and a silver cross pop. I've also got a bugaboo donkey but I don't fancy taking that abroad, although the wheels are great on that

Most resorts compact or clear streets and footpaths so a regular buggy is fine.

Username7521 · 26/01/2022 20:55

I took our yoyo skiing for two years and if we stuck to the paths it was fine.

gogohm · 26/01/2022 21:00

Took my normal cheap umbrella buggy, was fine

Thethingswedoforlove · 26/01/2022 21:32

I thought you mean to use going down the mountain !!

frillseeking · 26/01/2022 21:40

Ha no sorry! I'll be going to meet DD on the mountain so ideally would have something with a big wheel as you have to walk across the flat part of the piste to get to the kids area. I didn't even think about it until I read the snow can wreck the ball bearings or something in the wheels?!

LulusMiniEgg · 26/01/2022 21:43

Babyzen now do ski attachments so they must be suitable for the snow!

LIZS · 26/01/2022 21:44

No it won't damage it. You may be able to hire an all terrain on resort from the skihire shop.

Allpenguinsarepingus · 27/01/2022 05:50

I know from experience that Yoyos don’t cope well on ice and snow but if it’s for indoors or on cleared paths it’ll be ok. It’s true they’ve just added skis for the front wheels as an accessory so maybe it would work better with them.

That's what I'd read penguins. I saw they've got those skis now for the front wheels which you can click on but I was worried about the back wheels but I guess they must be ok otherwise they wouldn't advertise it like that you'd think

I would ditch the pram all together and just rent a sledge when you’re there. We took our 19 month old in December and found he preferred to walk in the snow or sit in the sledge. Was a waste taking our mountain buggy tbh (all depends on how close your accommodation is to the slope and resort buses etc). We won’t be taking a buddy out with us in the spring.

Caspianberg · 27/01/2022 07:30

The paths vary.
We have a mountain buggy and yo-yo and live in Austria. At the moment I use mountain buggy mainly, but we are countryside based. But if your just using in town centre, and inside for them to nap the yo-yo would be fine, and ideal for travel.

Otherwise i would bring the bugaboo donkey. Handy as can pile load of stuff in the side basket, and bigger wheels.

It really depends on snow conditions. Right now it hasn’t snowed properly here since new year, so paths mainly clear, and just piled up at the sides and off road. But if it snows it will take a few days for paths to be re cleared by snow clearers as roads done first.

Sledge handy

CalmDownBoris72 · 27/01/2022 09:08

We have a yo-yo too and I’m thinking about the skin attachments. When do you go? We’re not going until the end of the season so hoping to get away with the yo-yo and not a bigger buggy.

Caspianberg · 27/01/2022 09:13

The skis I’m a bit dubious about. For us the babyzen works great in summer, or in winter in restaurants, shops, travel. But like now places are patchy, ie some pavement clear, some Icey, so the skis wouldn’t work. Only on thin compact perfect snow

Do you have a sling? We use the toddler Tula a lot in the thick snow. Ds is 20 months and fits fine with snowsuit as well on my back. That way you could take the babyzen for restaurant naps and airport, sling for naps or walks in snow and borrow sledge. We have a back on our sledge. You can buy locally at sport or diy type shops as well

frillseeking · 27/01/2022 09:14

We're going in March so it might be ok. Think that's a really good point about the snow conditions. I think the bugaboo would be really handy but we don't have a travel bag for it so that's something else I'd have to buy!

I did think about a carrier but he'll be 23 months when we go and he's a big lad, I don't think I'd be able to carry him about. The tourist info came back to me and said none of the shops have mountain buggy's for rent so will have to rule that out. The town will be fine it's just when we go to the base but maybe the sledge will be fine for that and I can collapse the yo yo and carry it

This is the toddler sling we use. Ds is around 12kg and tall and it’s really good. Much better than the ergo we had. The weight range is 11-27kg ( which is about a 5 year old I think).

frillseeking · 27/01/2022 09:37

Thank you for the link caspian they look great but I think if I'm going to buy something, I'd be better off buying the travel bag for the bugaboo. You sound very much in the know, any other tips?!

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 27/01/2022 10:01

I’m not sure the exact size of the bugaboo donkey folded, but for our car seat we bought a generic universal travel bag for flying. Might be cheaper. Also look on Facebook marketplace, they are the kind of thing many people buy and probably haven’t used much recently due to covid.

Tips, erm:

  • thick leggings/ tight joggers better than trousers under snowsuit as don’t bunch up
  • thin buff type scarf for toddler. Otherwise thick too stuffy. Kuling merino - often sales on Alex and Alexa
  • thin mittens as well. Thick waterproof good in snow, but I use the basic h and m thin mittens for in pram/ car. About £4 for pack 3
  • take snacks out for toddler. Ski huts are either super fast or super slow service. So snacks in meantime.
  • spaetzle is good food most toddlers like at huts. It’s kind of like gnocchi. Usually with cheese. Otherwise kaiserschmarrm is giant fat pancakes chopped up. They will prob eat a lot of fries if you want simple lunch out.
  • take swim stuff. Either hotel or local area will have pool and it’s nice to go to to warm up. Many have outdoor at 35 degree water still
ChateauMargaux · 27/01/2022 23:21

I can't imagine pushing anything other than a mountain buggy on the snow. A sledge and an ergo baby - what resort are you going to.. maybe we can share some insider knowledge..

Sleepyteach · 28/01/2022 07:49

Last time we went skiing the hotel had joie pushchairs (litetrax I think) which were ok on short bits of snow but this year we are taking our out n about. I would look on marketplace for a bag for the donkey if I were you, we paid £10 for a fab mamas and papas one with wheels.
