Covid recovery letter for teenagers

Has anyone had any joy with getting a Covid recovery letter for a teenager? DS aged 14 has had a positive lft today and now can't get his second vaccination for 12 weeks. I was hoping to book skiing for February half term.

Yes, I called my GP surgery today and they sent me an email/letter confirming and detailing daughters one vaccination plus proof of positive covid result. Hoping that will be enough!

Mia85 · 11/01/2022 20:18

I was wondering about this too. Now that they have abolished PCRs for asymptomatic cases I wasn't sure how it would work. Are you able to get the letter if you have simply registered a positive lft? I suppose the next problem is whether other countries will accept that.

Jenmeg2022 · 11/01/2022 21:31

I don’t know, my daughter’s was a positive PCR on her record. The letter doesn’t have a QR code so I’m hoping it will suffice with a French pharmacy to get the French health pass, but who knows. I’ve emailed the pharmacy in our resort to find out - waiting to hear back.

Yes I was looking at Italy and there you definitely need the QR code.

Wistful977 · 11/01/2022 22:07

Thank you both. It is really good to hear that Gp's can do this. It's hard though to not know if that will be sufficient as there's no qr code though? I was hoping to book Italy but I don't know if this will be sufficient? Someone on other thread has said that their hotel in Italy has said that a QR code is essential! I'm thinking about trying to ring inghams or Crystal tomorrow to ask for help

I am assuming that as I have recorded his positive lateral flow that it will be on his records? Perhaps I need to ring the GP too tomorrow and ask?

For Italy you need the super green pass for hotels, public transport, restaurants etc italygreenpass.com/super-green-pass-requirements-chart/ and from what I can see it's strictly enforced.

On eligibility for UK children who have recovered from Covid they say: "If your child has a digital NHS Covid Pass from recovery, the QR code on that certificate is what will be used in Italy as a super green pass (valid six months from start date on certificate). At the current time, the NHS is not providing the Covid Pass letter to certify recovery. If your child doesn’t have a digital NHS Covid Pass from recovery, contact 119 or NHS.UK to ask how you can get a recovery certificate for international travel."

There is a number you can call www.salute.gov.it/portale/nuovocoronavirus/dettaglioContenutiNuovoCoronavirus.jsp?lingua=english&id=5374&area=nuovoCoronavirus&menu=aChiRivolgersi

In theory Italy should accept one vaccination for teens (in past 6 months) or a recovery letter, in the same way as they ought to accept USA vaccination cards/recovery certificates which definitely won’t be readable with the Italian VerificaC19 app.

However the rules say there has to be some way to validate letters/certificates to ensure they are not fake…which seemingly means that a lot of places (hotels, ski pass offices etc) are basically saying if it doesn’t scan with the app the answer is no. My Italian isn’t up to arguing that every morning…plus I suspect they get fined if they don’t check properly so probably have no incentive to give anyone the benefit of the doubt.

It’s just not worth the gamble. Switzerland is fine with unjabbed under 16s though…

Mia85 · 11/01/2022 22:17

I don't know if recording a LFT will be enough, I guess it is extremely easy to fake and is not externally verified so I can see why it wouldn't count. The EU pass seems to require a PCR for recovery to count for their pass www.consilium.europa.eu/en/policies/coronavirus/eu-digital-covid-certificate/ but I am not sure what Italy will say if the NHS will issue a letter on the basis of a reported LFT.

Wistful977 · 11/01/2022 22:21

Gosh thank you that's sobering reading - I definitely don't want to spend the week arguing about the validity of a letter! Might have to look at Switzerland and accept long transfers Hmm

Italy only accept 1 jab for 42 days before the 2nd is required. We got a recovery letter from the GP for my DD. Was able to turn it into an EU Covid Pass though as she's got an Italian passport.

What about Andorra? Nothing required for U16s there. Although will need Spain or France to reduce restrictions for entry to get there!

Dinoboymama · 12/01/2022 10:58

Double check how it's recorded some countries only accept pcr positive tests for covid recovery.

@massistar would you mind sharing how you were able to convert it? Did you have to be in Italy to do it? We have EU passports too (not Italian though) so wondering if that might be the solution for my teen DD too.

We had to send the copy of her recovery letter to ULSS (health board) in Venice as this is the region where she's registered under AIRE. They then sent back an official EU Covid pass with QR code. Something similar likely in place for other EU countries?

Thanks for the reply @massistar. We’re not registered for health or other services in our EU country (have never lived there) so sadly suspect it won’t work for us. Glad you got it sorted though!
massistar · 12/01/2022 14:57

We're not registered there either for health. Husband has lived in UK for 25 years and is registered with AIRE ( association of Italians living abroad). When kids were born he registered them with the local registrar in his home town and AIRE. The certificate was sent via having citizenship.

ButPerfectlyFormed · 12/01/2022 15:32

Ah - thanks! I’ll make enquiries about whether we have something similar.
