Snow boots vs. Walking/hiking boots

First timer here. Have bought snow boots for DS to save the hassle of doing his laces, but are snow boots a must for adults/teen or do waterproof hiking boots boots do the same job?
TIA

Walking boots are fine, unless you are going off the beaten track. Everywhere I’ve been, boots have been great but I’d have survived with damp feet in normal shoes.

Snow boots will probably look more the part in a ski resort and be what most people are wearing. But if you're not bothered about looks, walking boots will be just fine. DH has only ever worn walking boots on many a ski trip, or heavy trainers if there's not much snow down in the village.

I prefer snow boots as they are so much easier to get on and off and saves the faff of laces. I tend to get the kids snow boots too for the same reason.

I prefer snow boots - my cheap decathlon ones have got me through 4 winters of skiing, and league football.

Sorry, if you meant for skiing then walking boots are fine but an absolute faff if you have take them on and off when you are collecting and handing your ski boots back, especially if you have cold fingers and salopettes on.

Walking boots are fine for adults and older kids; I’ve never needed snow boots. Snow boots better for younger kids as they tend to just stomp into the deep snow and snow boots are higher/have elastic that helps it getting in over the top.

I’ve worn the same pair of walking boots in resort for 15years and I don’t think I’ve retied them in all that time-knotted the laces and wear them as slip on/offs and they do the trick! The kids wore wellies last year for their first trips and it worked well as they too were slip on/off making the hellish boot changes slightly easier.

Depends when you’re going, if he’ll be doing any sledging etc as well. In Feb they are always useful. Late season it varies.

Have spent so much money on bloody snow boots over the years! Was handy when they were little and wanting to play on the snow and for changing in the boot room but my teens wouldn't be seen dead in them now. DS will probably wear entirely inappropriate trainers but hoping to get DD in an old pair from the attic.

DH has walking boots that look more like trainers and they've done him fine in both Austria and Iceland. I wear my Dublin river boots. Paired with a decent pair of socks they always keep me warm and dry. DS1 has outgrown his snow boots so we'll probably replace them with walking boots this year so he can get more use out of them.
