What skiwear for DD’s (15) school ski trip in December?

She is a complete novice. Not sure if she is likely to go again so don’t want to spend a fortune on stuff that she may only wear the once. Perhaps can hire the jacket and salopettes?

But just after a list of what she will need and quantities and tips on affordable places to buy from. She is going for a week to Austria.

Lidl have their ski wear in this week.

She needs sunglasses for wearing off the slopes but NOT for skiing - it's really dangerous if they shatter.

I recommend packing a few of those little disposable hand warmers, she can stick a couple in a zipped up pocket just in case. It's easy to accidentally let your hands get too cold especially these days when we tend to take our gloves off for a few minutes here and there to use smartphones and take photos etc - and then it's very difficult to warm them back up once the heat is lost. Especially if your gloves end up being wet or having snowflakes in.

School should give you a list.

Decathlon or mountain warehouse for ski googles and socks and gloves.
Base layers can be gym leggings and tshirts, anything wicking will be fine. And a fleece. No point buying expensive ones unless skiing is a regular thing, or you use merino base layers in other parts of your life.

I think cheap ski goggles will be fine for this trip particularly as it is in December. Decathlon ones would do. I wear goggles whatever the weather as they fit more easily on a helmet.

astoundedgoat · 23/11/2021 15:33

Roxy on Ebay, and Decathlon/Mountain Warehouse.

Roxy seems to be very trendy, and the trousers are slimmer fitting than some of less cool brands, but defnitely look on ebay!

My DD has cheap Decathlon goggles and they’ve lasted a few years now. She is an intermediate skier and in good weather they are fine. We’ve both only now upgraded to a more expensive brand as the cheap ones were not great for very dull or snowy days.

For a complete novice on blue or nursery slopes though Decathlon is fine. I think we paid around 10 euros for the pretty basic model.

The chances of this happening are minimal if not non-existent. Sunglasses have to meet certain minimum safety standards, as do normal glasses. People wear sunglasses (and glasses) when riding bikes, running, mountain biking and when skiing and snowboarding and doing lots of other sports. It is far more dangerous to the eyes to not have UV sunglasses when on the slopes than to worry about the remote possibility that they might shatter - they usually fly off anyway if the wearer has a bad fall.

What dedicated teachers! Every other ski trip I know was cancelled ages ago. It looks like rates are surpassing the rate they set to require passe sanitaire on ski lifts so I would love to know how they are proposing to meet that - will they be testing them all regularly if under 16?
The goggles look fine to me but would tend to prefer decathlon myself for low cost basics. Sunglasses there too. Agree not to get hung up on not skiing in them.

I wear glasses for skiing as I'd be unsafe if I didn't.

And sunglasses when it's sunny. Always. I have never heard that it's unsafe!

Also look at Vinted. I've been successfully selling our old skiwear there

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/12/2021 11:55

Are they still going (gone) ?

Rollergirl11 · 06/12/2021 13:46

@Muchtoomuchtodo alas no it’s been cancelled. The school tried to keep the trip alive for as long as possible but it just became completely unviable. It’s the right decision but a real shame.

So if anyone wants any brand new thermals, fleeces, salopettes and goggles give me a shout!!

@Rollergirl11 ah that’s a shame for DD I was getting excited for her.

I only went skiing once but I developed a love for thermals and fleeces - they come in handy when it gets cold and lasted me years. A lot of people have never had the experience of thermals and I always feel bad when it comes to bonfire night etc.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 06/12/2021 16:02

@Rollergirl11 what a shame for them all. Do you think they’ll get another chance while they’re at school?
Dc2 should have gone in year 8 but it’s been postponed twice so hopefully they’ll go in year 10 (2023). Luckily they decided well before people started shopping.
If you can’t return what you’ve bought there are skibay and family skibay groups on FB to sell the kit, but you may do better holding on to it until more people are going.

Rollergirl11 · 06/12/2021 16:30

@Muchtoomuchtodo no that will be it for them now. She’s in Year 11 and this was the absolute latest they could have gone in the school year without causing too much disruption to their GCSE’s. They were originally meant to go in Feb half term when they were in Year 10 but obviously we were in lockdown then.
