Large chalets in Morzine please

Has anyone been to Morzine and can recommend? We need a large chalet and a good resort for beginners to advanced skiers. Courchevel 1650 way too pricey for us and we are looking for something that has similar but for cheaper! Does such a thing exist?!

Neighbouring Chatel (still in the Portes De Soleil) might suit your group well too as there are loads of chalets to rent there. You could try The Grange Au Merle chalet if you are after something big and nice. Chatel is good for a range of abilities, the beginners have plenty to ski in Chatel and the more advanced can go over to Morzine and Avoriaz. I've always opted for Chatel over Morzine as people complain about the cable bottleneck in Morzine and it being quite low.

Ski Famille have lots of chalets in Les Gets (Morzine area) too.

Thank you!

Trying to wean my friend from Courchevel is proving difficult. Is the resort nice? Any swimming pools? Nice restaurants?

I've skied from Bansko to Bamf - I'd go anywhere but my loved ones are so choosy!!!

Chilly Powder are great

There are some really nice restaurants there they are mostly very Savoyard style so plenty of Fondue :-)

A new pool and spa centre was built in Chatel few years back called Forme D'O. If you are after great pools for kids then maybe Avoriaz would be best they have an amazing pool centre called Aquariaz. Not sure there are so many chalets in Avoriaz though.

Do they like the convenience and mileage of Courchevel or the swankiness?!

@NelAntarctic

For next year?

I’ve been to the PDS a few times but always in summer for the mountain biking. Last time we went we rented a huge chalet in Les Gets just up the road from Morzine. It slept about 10-12 and worked out actually really quite reasonable per person. This was summer though so obviously will be cheaper but I’d have thought a lot less than the “loadsamoney” resorts like Courcheval.

It was up near the swimming lake, it was listed on one of the local rental agencies, had a hot tub and sauna, balconies all round and was amazing! Also agree about the pool complex at Avoriaz, really good and the kids absolutely loved it.

Probably both!

Sorry! I name changed (was causing confusion on the bootcamp thread) I'm the OP! I

cf389 · 30/01/2021 08:47

Have a look at Reach4theAlps or VIP Ski- they both have chalets that would meet you requirements, although I think VIP have changed hands since I last went with them.

Love love Morzine, so much great skiing - up to Avoriaz and over to Switzerland if you want a big day, or stay local for some lovely blues and reds!

abricotine · 30/01/2021 11:06

I’d be wary about chalet bookings unless you are sure your money is protected (VIP is a case in point who are apparently rising from the ashes to take bookings later this year). The chalet industry has taken a massive hit and many operators are on the brink.
Morzine and Avoriaz are great. I would not stay in Les Gets as a more experienced skier as you will have to get across the mountain and across Morzine to get up to Avoriaz. The PdS is not linked up as well as the three valleys. It’s hard to say if your friend will like it. It certainly isn’t Courchevel - some cheesy bars and large groups of blokes on trips - but it’s down to earth , good Savoyard food in the town and the mountain and better value for money. But there is no posing in your Prada all in one with a €12 cappuccino and you might struggle to land your helicopter Grin have you tried the lower villages of the three valleys? Eg St Martin is always hugely popular and still gives good skiers access to the whole 3V

CisMyArse · 30/01/2021 13:20

Thanks @abricotine that's a good idea to look at other lower villages.

Does anyone have experience of La Plagne?

SkiYetiMagic · 30/01/2021 21:54

@NelAntarctic well for mileage and swanky I would say Megeve, but it's not as high up as Courchevel so it depends when in season you are planning on going. Montgenevre is great for height, convenience and mileage, its a lovely resort not sure its exactly swanky but fairly classy compared to a lot of purpose built French. La Tania seems the obvious choice for your group in 3V but im guessing you have already considered it?
If you would consider Italy then Cortina is very swanky although mid sized not as big as 3Vallees. Also Madonna Di C is lovely and quite good sized area. There are some amazing hotels dotted around the Dolomites resorts too or if you are all reasonable standard then you might like Champoluc. Camp Zero ticks the swanky box too here.
I know people are not always so keen to try Italy but once you try it its hard to go back to France!

NelAntartic · 31/01/2021 09:46

Thanks! No, not looked at La Tania - but initial reviews look really pleasing. An afternoon in Aquamotion is still doable (being that close) as is a night out in 1650 on chalet night off.

What are the facilities like in La Tania for non skiers? There could be 1 coming. Little shops etc?

SkiYetiMagic · 31/01/2021 12:23

There are a few shops there but it's a fairly small place, I imagine you would head to Courchevel still if you wanted to do lots of boutique shopping.

Dreamytree · 31/01/2021 17:54

I worked in la Tania a couple of seasons ago! Nice place but definitely not enough to do as a non skier! But a really handy place to get around the 3V! I also worked in morzine for a few seasons and would probably choose to go there if I had the choice of the 2.

Bakeachocolatecake2day · 31/01/2021 20:59

A friend recommended this to me; alikats.eu/catered-chalets/

Roo84 · 31/01/2021 21:15

A group of us stayed in Morzine this time last year (ohh what I'd give to be there now!)
We used Reach4the Alps and stayed in a catered chalet called Claire Valle, it was fantastic. Fabulous catering, hot tub on the balcony, short walk to the lifts and in the centre of town with lovely shops / restaurants on the doorstep. Would highly recommend. Believe it sleeps 10-12.
It was a few of the groups first time skiiing and we are now hooked and can't wait to go again!

NelAntartic · 31/01/2021 21:25

Thanks @Roo84
