Chalet/budget hotel to stay in France - skiing family of five

Hi, We have decided to drive to France next year during Feb half term. We have never driven before but due to a much high mortgage (moving next month!) have been forced to do it on a budget (for years to come!). We are thinking of splitting the drive over two days (I think) and stay in any budget hotel overnight as have not driven so many hours in one stretch before. The children are 9, 11 and 13.
Can you recommend any chalet/ budget hotel to stay during our skiing trip, we don't have any preferences as to what region in France we are going, the children are all lower intermediate skiers so anywhere should be fine. We flown to Austria a couple of times in the previous years but have never done skiing in France. Thank you! Smile

Hi. I would recommend having a look at this ski area if you are driving.
www.espacediamant.com/fr/domaine-ski-espace-diamant-2.html

There are also some very cheap apartments here (Chalet des Evettes) which are next to slopes and have a small pool. They are great for families but the only thing is they are quite remote so you need to drive to supermarket. They are def budget too! (but for france they have decent amount of space)

There are also some nice hotels on the link above if those arent suitable.

Ahh thank you SkiYetiMagic - the area looks brilliant, will def have a look!! Do you normally drive in one day or stay somewhere overnight?

I normally fly to Geneva! (But I met friends out there who drove instead) I think it just depends on your journey time in UK first before you get to the channel. You should be able to do from Calais to here in approx 8 hours.

Look out for chalets with 'cabin' .
In France they have legal minimum
Sizes to be able to call something a bedroom. So some chalets have a double bedroom, a sofa bed in the lounge and a cabin- or alcove off a corridor. A cabin is basically a very small bedroom- enough space for a bunk bed but no other furniture. Cheaper than a bedroom.

And Erna low do quite cheap stuff I think.

I was going to suggest Erna Low as well - they specialise in self-drive/self-catering: price includes Eurotunnel Flexi-plus crossings. We drive in a day to the bottom of the mountain, stay overnight in a cheap hotel/Ibis Budget style place, then get up early to drive up the mountain in the morning, aiming to be on the slopes for an extra day by 10am. Half term might be a bit harder as the French are on holiday, so roads busier etc - we are limited to school holidays so always go at Easter. There are a lot of threads in the skiing section about self-drive to France if you want to hunt them out.

Thank you! Erna low looks brilliant - will look into it now!
