Really stupid question...

...but if you have tweens/ young teens do you ski every day on your ski hol and for how many hours a day? DH and I seem at odds over what is reasonable.

We ski every single day and are normally in the slopes by 9:30. Stop for a 20min hot choc at about 11:30, lunch at 1:30 (depending on prices) then finish between 3-4:30.

If you have learners, the they'll be exhausted so perhaps less skiing.

I have friends that have a day off mid week for a pool and shopping day.

We ski 9 - 3.30/4 sometimes later, drink stop and late lunch.

I can never understand the day off unless you go for more than a week.

My kids are younger so are in ski school every morning so we ski whilst they are in ski school. Pick them up and either ski a bit more and then finish early/go back to chalet for lunch and chill. Or have lunch on the slopes/resort and ski the afternoon. My eldest would happily keep skiing until it was dark so I'm dreading in a few years time when they are teens and no longer in ski school and probably better than old, knackered me.

I used to be a "first on the slopes, last off the slopes" person but now I'm happy to get a few hours skiing and knock off early for drinks and chilling. But not sure my kids will feel the same in a couple of years!

PatriciaHolm · 23/02/2020 11:35

DS would happily be out 10-4 with stops for coke/hot choc/lunch. DD is less gung ho and likes her rest days, but then they ski for at least 2 weeks each year and have done since they were 2 so it's not quite the novelty it might be! She's better when other kids are around too.

PatriciaHolm · 23/02/2020 11:36

Also - they are old enough/good enough to ski with friends not Dad any more if required!

ChilliMum · 23/02/2020 11:44

Every day. When they were small we often just skied in the morning as they tired easily but now they are older its all day (but later start 9.30 /10 ). Skiing only available for a limited time so we need to make the most of it.

Really cant see the point of shopping / pool etc as you can do that anytime. I would only consider not skiing if it was to do another limited time activity (sledding etc..)

"What is reasonable?"
Surely what is reasonable is what you want to do?
Dh has always been a "let's get up and get on" sort of skier, and I prefer a slower start to the day, so that's what we do - meet up later.
We've usually holidayed in large groups, with plenty of different options for who to go out with. But even when we've just been with the 4 of us, we are flexible. In the early years, we were bound by ski-school times, but once the kids finished with all that, they usually opted to go out early with dh.

I've got a tween and a teen and we're of the first chair, last chair mentality as a family. This year even being on the slopes at 915 and coming down to the village at 4ish they were going back up with their mates to do one last run! Luckily we found a nice bar in the sunshine at the bottom to wait for them as my legs are dead by that point!

TeetotalKoala · 27/02/2020 23:47

Why do you all need to do the same thing? My DH is not a morning person, I am.

So this year he got up with us for the first three days, dropped them at ski school/skiied with me, then for the last three, he stayed in bed. I got the DC and myself ready, dropped them at ski school and skiied by myself. He then met us for lunch, the DC went back to ski school, we skiied, then after ski school, skiied with them for an hour (usually on the nursery slopes - near the bar).

On one of his lazy mornings, DS2 decided he wanted a chill morning too, so DS1 and I left them to it until they met us for lunch.

Aurignacian · 27/02/2020 23:50

Ski all day every day. There’s no point in spending all that money otherwise!

frequencykenneth · 28/02/2020 11:22

This is probably a self-selecting group. Who hangs out on a skiing chat board if they aren't that into skiing?! Another first / last lift family here Grin

Youhedge · 28/02/2020 20:53

Good point Kenneth

Ginfilledcats · 03/03/2020 06:34

Another one who skis all day every day, usually on the slopes within the first half hour of chairs opening (husband is captain faffer otherwise I'd be on the first chair) stop for hot chocolate around 11, stop for lunch and beer around 13:30/2 when the restaurants are quieter, prob call it a day around 4/4:30 or whenever we make it to the apres bars.

I've done it like that since I was 7/8. Your teen/tweens will cope with skiing all day. You'll be tired yes, but skiing isn't exactly a relaxing holiday, rest when you get home! Someone in our group always has "wally wednesday" where for some reason they forget how to ski/have a bad day on the Wednesday of the week, so we sometimes do a shorter day and go for a swim/walk/drink earlier than usual.

Just plan to be out all day, and make amendments as your group sees fit.

Have a fab time

Ginfilledcats · 03/03/2020 06:35

Also lift passes are expensive - why would you not try and get the most for your money?
