OK so here's our requirements :
Children 11&14 never skied before but intend to get them past beginner stage before going
DH very good skier
I'm OK
I like wide blue, sunny runs!
DH likes challenge
We need a decent resort where it's not miles to get to the posted. If self catering there needs to be a good selection of restaurants that are not too expensive.
DH says half board hotels won't have many options on the menu - is that right?
Sleeping wise we either need two bedrooms - ideally with a connecting door or something with 2 sleeping areas to give DD some privacy.
Help Wink

We went to Montgenèvre this year - first family skiing holiday - dh very experienced, I’m nervous, dds (12 and15) never skied before. It was perfect - lovely runs, very quiet, real family feel (no groups of teens getting drunk) - check out Go Montgenèvre - we stayed self catering but they do all options, amazing transfers from all local airports, all ski hire and lessons. We’d definitely go back. Dh didn’t get bored and if a bigger challenge is in order they do days trips to other parts of ‘the milky way’

When are you planning on going?
www.avoriaz.com/en/winter/

It's a no car resort.
Fly into Geneva.
Shuttle bus to resort. www.skiidygonzales.com/

L'Amara would be one of the best places to stay. Standard and premium apartments both have 3 room apartments with a living room, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchenette, etc.
www.pierreetvacances.com/gb-en/fp_AVP_self-catering-premium-residence-l-amara/accommodation?

There are other places to stay but not all will have 2 bedrooms - some will be fold out sofa bed in the living room type accommodation.

Most hotels in the area will give you a card which allows you to access other activities - the Loisipass.

Waterpark - Aquariaz www.avoriaz.com/en/things-to-do/activities-wellness/aquariaz-winter/

Lots to do, lots of different places to eat if you don't fancy cooking.

Was going to say Montgenevre as well. Flights to Turin relatively cheap, transfers can be arranged from the airport. We stayed in mmv apartments which can be booked directly and have an outdoor heated pool. Lots of nice restaurants- somewhat pricey but can also get pizzas to keep costs down.

ImMeantToBeWorking · 18/06/2019 17:12

Saalbach has some lovely runs for what you are looking for. We stayed HB and there was 3 options a day, salad bar etc. I am a picky eater and there was always something I would eat on the menu. Also loads of restaurants if you decide to go self-catering (link for one family stayed in - www.holidayflats24.com/buchen/appartement-birke-top-11/?ssl=Appartement+Birke+Top+1&ssv=1186%2C1185%2C1184&sst=buchen&persons=2)

We are going back next year, this is the first time we have returned to a ski resort ever, and we as a group have skiied all over Austria.

Beautiful blues for you, challenging blacks for you DH and plenty of ski schools and space for beginners for your teens.
Lots of Self catering and restaurants.

Saas Fee? It doesn't have millions of blue runs, but it does have the widest, most flattering and scenic blue run I've ever been on! And there's a good amount of challenge. The beginners area is at the bottom and the progression runs are perfect. Everything is walkable... Switzerland can be expensive but we found it good value nonetheless. I've never been to a more beautiful ski resort from a location point of view, the town itself is often fairly modern but well done in a traditional style, it looks very alpine.

Grimentz has a similar spread of skiing; the scenery isn't quite as amazing as Saas Fee but the village is the prettiest I've seen.

soulrunner · 16/08/2019 14:45

Niseko!

SunnySomer · 16/08/2019 14:52

LuckyBitches - we’ve just had a summer holiday in Switzerland. I’ve basically been there every year for the last 50 years (family there) and expensive is no longer a suitable adjective. The value of the pound has plummeted (almost at parity with the frank) and I really, really wouldn’t recommend it as an affordable trip. Though I’m sad to say so.

Legomadx2 · 16/08/2019 14:58

Andorra - Soldeu. Park Piolets or the Sport Hotel.

Ticklemeelmo · 16/08/2019 15:10

This may be a bit late but definitely Kranskja Gora in Slovenia. Mostly blue runs with a few red and black, nice hotels right next to the slopes and super cheap for the lift passes. It's also a really pretty town, like something out of Hansel and gretal

CollaterlieSistersSister · 18/08/2019 17:25

Andorra Soldeu definitely for you - lovely wide blue & sunny runs, especially Gal de Bosc from top of mountain to bottom. Doesn’t ever seem overly busy and the lift system is efficient and quick - hardly ever a queue more than a few minutes, even at peak times.

LuckyBitches · 19/08/2019 16:23

@SunnySomer fair enough, I haven't been to Switzerland since 2012. I am worried now though as we are going for a (potentially ruinous!) trip this winter.

I missed the bit about restaurants in the OP. We always self cater and Swiss restaurants generally aint cheap. We're vegetarian though, and meat seems to be pricier.

Kam610 · 19/08/2019 16:32

Does it have to be Europe? We were in Canada in the summer and although we weren't able to ski, we stayed in Whistler where there is an amazing ski resort. It really had the proper ski resort feel. Ideal for all ages and abilities. I would love to go back in the winter! As far as I'm aware there are also other amazing ski resorts further east like Mont-Tremblant in Quebec. My DH was there as a youngster and said it was fab!

youarenotkiddingme · 19/08/2019 16:35

Alpe dhuez

Lovely and sunny resort. Plenty of blue runs and easier reds. Lots of hard reds with moguls and black runs for dh - including the tunnel run.
All listed are central and easier slopes are central to resort.

Bucket lift makes getting around resort easier.

Nice restaurants and a swimming pool and ice rink too.

SunnySomer · 19/08/2019 18:00

@LuckyBitches - we tend to self cater and shop en route in France or Germany- this time we were less able to do that so perhaps that added a bit. And when we ski we do packed lunches which makes it less ruinous... where are you off to?

LuckyBitches · 20/08/2019 12:11

Hi @SunnySomer, we're off to Evolene by plane/train/bus. They seem to have a Co-op which I remember being one of the cheaper supermarkets. We're planning to snowshoe more than ski (being middle-aged as we now are!) so hopefully it won't be too ruinous!

OP having considered your original question properly, I would echo what's been said upthread about Bad Gastein. Good value with a good spread of skiing, although the bluer runs are mostly in Bad Hofgastein, which is accessible by bus or multiple gondolas. Bad Gastein is a fairly divisive place - I loved its derelict grandeur, others in our party found it depressing. And the hills in the town are unbelievably steep! But there's nowhere quite like it. Val Cenis also springs to mind, there's another thread about it.
