What’s your favourite place to ski in Europe?

Just planning a New Year’s Eve trip and can’t decide where we fancy

Need decent beginner type blues and some challenging blues and easy reds on the whole.

We have been to Val d’Isere, Tignes, Les deux Alpes and over the years but would consider going back to one of them.

Shorter transfer would be nice.

What resorts have you loved the most and why?

Espace Killy or Zermatt. If you have beginners or timid novices amongst your party I’d stick to the Espace Killy.

Whereareyouspot · 08/04/2019 19:51

No absolute beginners but it will be second ever week for a couple
Just want plenty of area to all be able to travel round in a days skiing without having to do harder reds etc.

Yes Killy is great- which resort do you like most and why?

What about Meribel? Agree that Zermatt is great as well but maybe not for beginners.

I did a season in Serre Chevalier years ago and had the time of my life, great for all abilities, huge ski area, absolutely beautiful, but it doesn't have the same vibe as some of the more well known resorts (much more French/lots of locals/no posh shops/all quite low key but really lovely)

Whereareyouspot · 08/04/2019 21:14

Yes have been to courcheval before and liked it

Just can’t decide what is best overall

Anyone rate les gets or Les arcs?

I believe Les Gets is very family friendly
If that is a factor for you. I've been to Les Arcs 1600 and didn't love it to be honest but it was a while ago (prob a good 10 years) so it could be totally different now.

I'm starting to think about ski holidays for next season too. Will be the first time with children (3year old and an under one) will be a very different kind of holiday I think 🙈 have you ever travelled with Ski Famille? Have heard really good things about them.

Pandasarecute · 09/04/2019 07:56

I've been to Les Arcs, stayed at 1950 which was lovely, small pretty village. Loads of runs mainly from 2000 which is a very short cabriolet ride away. Love the fact that it's ski in ski out

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 09/04/2019 19:56

I’d be more concerned about snow myself. Go high and wrap up!

Millie2013 · 09/04/2019 20:02

Espace Killy or 3V (we like La Tania, but tend to go mid season, so it’s more snow sure)
Also like Serre chevalier or montgenevre, but have only skied there as a student

massistar · 10/04/2019 12:07

Les Gets is lovely for beginners but it's a bit low for New Year possibly. Also too many flat bits for me (snowboarder) :-) Kids loved it though.

Have you thought about the Dolomites for a change? I love Canazei.

massistar · 10/04/2019 12:08

We were in La Plagne at New Year this year and ended up going over to Les Arcs as the snow was so much better there. La Plagne was a like a skating rink.

CaurnieBred · 10/04/2019 13:42

Dolomites. Corvara (Italy) is my happy place. Snow making is fantastic so, even if not enough natural by then, all the slopes still open

thislido · 10/04/2019 17:25

Flaine. Lovely short transfer, lots of skiing that would suit you, in a bowl so all well connected at the bottom, pretty snow sure.

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 10/04/2019 20:02

Flaine is very low for New Year

Atalune · 10/04/2019 20:06

You need to consider altitude and snow suredness.

Meribel ticks a lot of your boxes.
ValThorens too.

Avoid les gets- too low and flat!

Just come back from la plange- as long as went high....on the glacier it was super!

thislido · 10/04/2019 20:59

Flaine is very low for New Year

I vaguely remember it having some kind microclimate that meant it was much snowier than its altitude suggested. I hate skiing at new year - too busy, worse that Christmas!

Yeahyeahyeahyeeeeah · 12/04/2019 20:40

Every resort claims a microclimate.. when they are low lying.

Zebedee88 · 12/04/2019 20:45

We went to les gets for our first time..it was okay.
Then went to value d'slere for a few times, so much better, we really enjoyed. Although now we go to Canada, however you mentioned Europe, definitely not les gets.

PickleSarnie · 12/04/2019 21:02

Alpe D'Huez on the Bergers side. Not too hideous a transfer. Snow sure. And really nice bowl that the runs all come into and ski schools meet.

We are off to Tignes tomorrow. Hideous transfer time but Easter v late this year so wanted as snowsure as possible.

poshme · 20/04/2019 21:13

Les gets- can be ok at new year- but low & risky. I've been once at new year- we were skiing round grassy patches. Pretty village. Chalets & hotels & apartments. Lots of places to eat.

Flaine- it is low- but is far more snow sure than Les gets. I've skied Flaine at new year- lots of snow. I'm in Flaine now. Still most pistes are open- snow getting thin. It's closing in 2 days- les gets closed a week ago. (I think)
Flaine can be ski-in ski-out depending where you stay. It is NOT pretty. Concrete apartment blocks. Not many places to eat. Mostly self catering using the local spar.

Both short transfers.

Aroundtheworldandback · 05/05/2019 22:54

Courchevel, lovely wide slopes, gorgeous restaurants.

juneau · 06/05/2019 08:40

Courchevel would be perfect for what you want. It's a huge area, but loads of blues and some nice, easy reds. Lots of places to eat, good nightlife, supermarkets, the lot. My only two gripes about it are 1) it's expensive and 2) the transfer from GVA is 2.5 hours.

At new year you need to go high, so Ischgl, Espace Killy, the higher levels of Les Arcs, Obergurgl/Hochgurgl would all work too.

FatArse123 · 01/10/2019 16:25

I like scandinavia, Hemsedal in Norway and Are in Sweden. Lovely hard snow, which I like. The lifts actually get to the summits of mountains so there's a lovely top-of-the-world feeling, 360 degree views in very clear air. No slush.

MargoLovebutter · 01/10/2019 16:26

Are in Sweden or Trysil in Norway.
