Is it worth getting the slope insurance?

Just that really as interested in others views. I don't know if they have it in other countries but basically in most French resorts you can pay an extra 2-3 euros per day for slope side insurance. We took it as last year when I hurt my back - after being rammed into by mad French man- the clinic was mostly interested in being paid in cash before they'd do anything. But maybe we were just over cautious as it should be covered by normal holiday insurance ( have included winter sports).

We always get this. It covers you if you need to be airlifted off the mountain, or taken down on a stretcher - I don't think you'll find normal travel insurance will cover this (ours doesn't, anyway!).

From someone rescued from the mountain on our first day or our ski trip, ambulance to hospital, private ambulance back to airport, escort through airport, three seats on plane for me and escort/ambulance back in uk - get the insurance.

Thanks this is interesting as this year our trip was a package including lift passes, when I asked if slope insurance was covered I was told no because our own insurance would cover us. As i say we bought it anyway and thankfully didn't need it.

I suspect your own insurance would cover things like costs once you reached the hospital/clinic, as well as things like stolen hire equipment or lack of snow, but my understanding is that it won't cover you to be evacuated off the mountain. You should take out the additional insurance for this (I think they call it 'carre neige' in France).

I always take it although friends of mine assured me that my regular insurance would cover it, I don't want to be worrying about it if I need getting off the mountain

katieviney · 18/03/2019 10:33

Defiantly worth buying it. i always pay extra for it and the extra at the ski hire shops as well.
Travel insurance when you add snow sports should cover it as well but the French will sometimes ask for payment up front depending on travel insurance.

Having just been taken off the mountain, we were told it was included in the lift pass price. This was France

I hope you are recovering ok. I'm now really confused as on the piste map at our French resort it specifically says you aren't covered for slope rescue without the additional insurance

Ok, I'm sorry to hear about your experience - hope you make a quick recovery!

Rookie - We're going in a couple of weeks to Tignes and I will still take out the additonal insurance - personally, I'm not prepared to take the risk of not being covered. Certainly, in Tignes, they are very clear that you are not covered for evacuation without it - unless your own insurance covers it (our annual policy covers winter sports but doesn't mention evacuation). We organise our own trips so need to purchase the lift passes ourselves -it's just a question of ticking an additional box online for insurance. Perhaps if you have a package with passes included then the insurance cost will be automatically added on, but I would definitely check this is the case.
