I was wondering whether anyone uses them? Any recommendations and advice on what to buy and how the fit should be?

Haven't ever used them.. is it for normal skiing or are your kids into tricks and jumps?

just for normal skiing. I saw some kids at the dry slope wearing them for their lessons. I thought maybe i should be investing in one for the girls as they are getting faster and faster.

Think they are the norm for racing, especially slalom, but not otherwise.

Hmm. I've never really considered it for my 2 to be honest. And my DS skis awfully fast, albeit very controlled. I think ski injuries tend to be more lower limbs. Unless racing, off piste or jumping it seems like overkill to me but it's not going to do any harm.

Ours do but they go to a race club at our local dry slope.
They didn’t before that.

I think I would have thought the same about helmets 10 years ago - why do we need to wear helmets they only need them for racing. But look at the slopes these days - you very rarely see anyone without a helmet. The head and the spine are the most critical things really aren’t they so I wondered why we don’t naturally protect both. My kids are very controlled but there are some idiots on the piste that like to go stupidly fast and it’s them that I am more worried about taking them out and they go flying...

We all wear them. It's just part of the kit. We have Dakine, Poc, Scott and Cairn brands. The vest ones areore comfortable than the straps ones and the shell style seem to have lost favour. We live within striking distance of the mountains so ski a fair bit and I keep my eye out for second hand ones as they are an expensive piece of equipment.

Thanks all - now I have been thinking about it, I have just gone for it and found a couple of back protectors new but on eBay. Better to be save than sorry, and I will kick myself if something happened to them and I had been considering it but didn’t go through with it. the kids seem to like wearing the ones I got and for the price it was worth it!
