Ski Holiday Flying Out Mid Week

Is it possible?

My DH wants to take my son skiing but I don’t want him out of school fo a week and was thinking 2/3 days off school wouldn’t be so bad. All of the holidays I’ve been looking at fly out on a Saturday or Sunday and we can’t afford to do it February half term.

Have you thought about a long weekend and organising it yourself? So, EasyJet or wherever to the Alps then see if you can nab a self catering flat. It’ll be a pain to organise but more flexible

Book flights and accommodation individually? Personally I'm not sure it's worth it for a beginner to go skiing for a couple of days. They need a week to get the hang of it.

There are a few places that will do short weeks, but it’s limited. The issue is any lessons would need to be private as they run with the week. Unless he’s an instructor or your D.S. is beyond lessons, DIY is not ideal.

Chamonix
Courmayer
austria more widely, tend to do short weeks.

We’ve also found a place in Flaine this year too.

We always book direct ourselves

We did it last year. Flew out Wednesday night and back Sunday night. Got 2 private lessons cause ski school wasn't an option and they were all bombing around in no time

Baqeria beret too my DH is going on his trip part week.

We went to Sierra Nevada in Spain ( 2 hours from Malaga) good for us as lots of green and blue runs as ours kids were young. Booked apartment air bnb. Worked well especially for me as I don't love skiing but dh does and boys were mad to try it so I sucked it up.

i'm going with skiweekender they do Thursday evening to Monday evening so 3.5 days on the slopes

namechangedtoday15 · 15/01/2019 11:50

We've just done Thurs to Sunday and in previous years we've done Friday to Wednesday or Thursday. Having said that, we've always gone over Christmas / New Years holidays.

As pps have said, ski school is usually 6 days (Sun- fri) but booking private lessons is usually very easy. We use Easyjet or similar and book accommodation separately (AirBnB or via the local tourist board). That's the tricky bit as most places want a week's booking.

namechangedtoday15 · 15/01/2019 11:52

We got 3.5 days on the slopes doing Thurs - Sunday. 7am flight, resort transfer 1 hr, skiing by 1pm. 8pm flight home on Sunday.

DH normally has a catered chalet and think that’s what he is after. Yes he has been once before but would need a couple of private lessons. So unfair the prices rocket for half term, just not affordable.

Catered chalets will (I'm pretty certain) all work on week-long bookings. But you could book half board in a small hotel for the same meal options. Hotel also the most likely to be bookable by the night (rather than for a week). Most SC places will probably be week long bookings too.
How about flying to Munich (lots of midweek flights, unlike most of the ski-focused airports which mainly have weekend flights) and going to Austria - lots of resorts close by. Or Geneva and quick transfer to Morzine/Les Gets/Avoriaz.

backinthebox · 17/01/2019 21:45

There are lots of companies doing catered chalets for a 5 day break, but they aren’t much cheaper than going out for a week. France tends to be the main country for chalets, but Austria do hotels (and they do them really well!) and you can get small family suites quite reasonably by the night full board in some nice hotels if your DH wants a catered feel. If you fly out to Munich you are within an easy 2hr drive or train journey of loads of resorts. If you are on a budget most Austrian ski resorts drop the price of their lift passes from mid-March onward. Normally the lower resorts are starting to lose their snow on their lower slopes by then but there is so much snow in Austria atm I think you’d be fairly safe booking later.

backinthebox · 17/01/2019 21:48

Also the Skistar resorts in Sweden do a Thursday-Sunday long weekend self catering booking but flights will be a bit more difficult to find and probably more expensive. The accommodation is very cheap and the lift passes are reasonable, but the food is more expensive.
