What do I need to pack?

Going on our first ski trip in 3 weeks to a catered chalet. Other than the usual baselayers, salopettes, gogglesetx is there anything I need to pack that I might not have considered?

We take mini packs of tissues, fun size chocolates for snacks for DDs ski lessons, sunscreen and lip balm. I also take a small backpack to put everything in and avoid overflowing pockets - got a cheap and cheerful one from Decathlon.

We also take an extra pair of gloves for our daughters - somehow they always get theirs soaking wet so a spare pair always handy.

Hope you have a great time! We're away in Feb and can't wait.

Neck gaiters. Really useful for tucking down to stay warm, can't fall off like a scarf, or pulling up over mouth/nose if weather turns yucky.

Warm footwear for when you're not skiing. Snow boots if it's likely to be snowy in the town/village or decent hiking trainers if it'll just be wet/cold/icy.

T shirts or thin layers as ski resort chalets/bars etc tend to be thermonuclear with their thermostats.

Lip sunscreen

Have a great time

Muscle soak for the bath and ibuprofen if you've not skied before - you might find yourself using muscles you didn't know you had!

stringbean · 13/12/2018 20:45

And definitely neck gaiters - they can double as a hat and are thin enough to be pulled up under a helmet and round your face/mouth/ears it it gets really cold.

2gorgeousboys · 14/12/2018 06:33

Thanks stringbean muscle soak and ibuprofen will definitely be needed I think! What's a neck gaiter - is it like a buff?

WingingWonder · 14/12/2018 06:41

Pharmacistswife · 14/12/2018 06:41

And yes a fleecy buff is perfect 👍🏼

stringbean · 14/12/2018 07:33

Yes - neck gaiter = buff

BabyG2004 · 14/12/2018 12:22

I can't wear orange filter googles - they make me feel sick :-(

Tube of hand wash for rinsing out base layers in the sink so you don’t need to take 5 sets.

Chocolate for ski lesson snack in the jacket pocket

French Adaptor and extension lead for electronics.

Little disposable handwarmers.
Plasters / compede for blisters.
You may need photographs for lift passes?
Little stickers (to write name / initials on) if you're hiring skis so your little ones can recognise their skis
Extra gloves (I lost one of mine on the first day last year - cheapest I could find was £80)
Pack of cards (always useful)

2gorgeousboys · 21/12/2018 06:46

Thanks everyone. Some really good extras I'd not considered.

thermals, goggles, sunglasses, hair ties, layers!

having a thick jumper is great, but won't keep you as warm as loads of layers which will hold layers of air in-between to keep you insulated

skiing socks - if you're new, get tube socks because the heel can rub in your boots
Sliders or crocs to travel into the hotel's boot room in- in the afternoons, everyone's snow will melt in the boot room, so if you're not wearing slide on shoes, you'll get wet feet!
cereal bars - it's tiring work
spare gloves
velcro strips to wrap around your skis - these will help you to spot your skis easily on the slopes on when they're stored at hotel

The most important thing though: SUNCREAM!
Although it's a cold holiday, the UV rays from the sun are a lot stronger in the mountains. The snow will reflect them so that they bounce up to your face, making them more concentrated, and as the winds are colder, this will make you less hydrated and more susceptible to burning. So stock up on tonnes of suncream, lip balms and moisturiser for the evenings.
