Skiwear

What do you wear when skiing?

I’ve been a few times and was advised to have only ski socks between my legs and ski boots.

However I always get blisters on my shins and ankles Sad though less so when I wear pop socks under my ski socks.

I’ve also seen ski onesies/suits online, some with skinny trouser legs and wonder how people wear these:
Over a base layer +/- intermediate layer?
Inside their boots or outside (do they even stretch over?) Confused

And, if anyone has found the Holy Grail of functional yet stylish ski outerwear with LOADS of pockets, please share! Wink

Sorry, my phone is playing up and I am now on my laptop on a different username.

I don't like insulated outerwear as I overheat. But when I was skiing regularly I wore full length thermal leggings, then ski socks then my shell ski pants; I don't remember having any issues with that.

I think you can get gel pads now to go on your shins or on the tongues of the boots (no idea where they actually stick!) to give a bit of cushioning; but if pop socks work for you then go with it, but make sure that everything is wrinkle free and doesn't slip down.

I'm skiing this February in Finland and will wear fleece thermal leggings, ski socks, shell ski pants, I will take some insulated ski pants for if it drops below -20ish (was fine in -20 skiing in those layers last time). On my top I'll wear a thin thermal vest, a fleece mid layer, a long pile fleece jacket (mountain hardwear monkey woman) and then my gore-tex. I will carry a uniqlo ultralight compact down vest and I'll take a non down insulated coat too, again in case it is very cold.

I don't like carrying tonnes of stuff in my pockets and prefer to carry everything in a well fitting stable rucksack if I can't leave it in a convenient locker.

My Mum had some of those skinny stretchy ski pants back in the 70's and they stretched over the top of the ski boots. I'd hazard a guess the same is true of the modern version?

I usually wear leggings under salopettes. Down to the ankles and thin socks over the top. Your feet swell during the day, so thin layers can be good. Dry socks for lunchtime and second part of the day can be good too. Depending on where and when you're going, I've never liked ski jackets. Too warm. I now ski in a t-shirt, fleece and softshell jacket. Cintamani from Iceland if you can find one. Mine's 10 years old but I've worn it week in week out for all of that. I'd rather chuck on a light waterproof if it's snowy. I use cycling glasses with orange lenses rather than goggles too because I find them much more comfortable. A runner's or cycling waterproof would probably give you lots of pockets round the body.

You really shouldn’t be getting blisters, do your boots fit properly?
Aldi do lovely padded ski socks, they cost a bit more than the ‘tube’ type socks, but fit so much better, and last years if washed carefully.
A hydrocoloid plaster (like a large blister plaster) would also give you some padding on you shins and heels. If you are careful how you put them on, they will stay on for a week, despite showering. Apply them before you start skiing and just leave them in place.
I wear the compression type thermals under shell trousers and a light fleecy top under a good ski jacket. If temp very low -10 or lower then an additional thin cotton vest between the thermal and fleece. In Norway in January when the temp was -25/30, I wore a two thin fleeces over the thermals, a pair of fleecy tights between the thermal leggings and shell pants, and thin silk gloves under ski gloves.
I use a small cross body ski bag or just put stuff in the jacket pockets.

Thanks for the tips.
I’ll get my boots checked and revisit my skiwear/bag options.

Go snowboard style.. much cooler. :)

I like to layer so tend to wear base layer, micro fleece and ski jacket. I've never worn thermal leggings, find them too hot and restrictive.

One thing I would say is it's worth spending on good ski socks. You shouldn't be getting blisters so make sure your boots fit properly.

Never had an all in one.. they look incredibly chic on Italian skiers with perfect hair. I spend too much time on my backside to pull it off!
