Best gloves for 4 year old skiing for the first time in January

We are taking our 4 year old skiing in Chamonix in January. It will be his first time and I am keen to ensure he is as warm as possible so he has a great experience. What ski gloves are the best for kids this age? Please suggest the brands you have used for kids and found worked.

Not sure about brands, but I would suggest mitts rather than gloves as they tend to keep hands warmer. And glove strings or wrist strap to thread through jacket sleeves so there is no risk of losing a glove if he takes them off for any reason. My dcs used mitts from H&M which were fine but we ski at Easter which is warmer. Have a look here little skiers

Thanks so much @stringbean. How old were your kids when they first Went?

Agree mittens with clips or string/elastic threaded through the sleeves. Look for those labelled thinsulate. Maybe buy a spare set for when they are soggy or lost.

We have good winter snow mittens from Gap that were quite cheap. Then I’d buy a separate mitten string from amazon.

I'm about to write a blog on this!
Mittens which zip up are much much easier to put on than anything else and warm.

Clips are safer than string through the back which can potentially get caught on a ski lift.
Buy a spare pair in case they get soaked through.

When we were in Italy lasted xmas we were recommended Hesta. Not tried them yet but have bought them for this year. Also recommend mitts for younger kids.

I'll let you know when it's up.
Here's the one on footwear...

Don’t skimp on the gloves. Cold wet hands make for a miserable skiing experience. Also a good idea to buy two pairs.

We’ve tried lots of brands for our kids over the years and the best so far have been salomon goretex gloves.

I like decathlon! We live in France and parents don’t buy anything else here even though it’s cheap. In fact our kids are kitted our head to toe in decathlon as it’s easy and reliable. The kids gloves/mittens have a longer ‘skirt’ (what’s the bit going up the wrist called?) to avoid a bare patch. I’d second getting mittens for warmth and also a couple of pairs for if they get soaked through. Don’t buy too tight and buy undergloves in case it’s really chilly.

Random tip: If your children get warm sweaty hands use baby powder to help get gloves back on. You can buy travel size.

Aldi / Lidl for jackets, salopettes, thermals etc but we got these mittens for our then 4 & 5 year old and they are awesome. Huge long gaiter to keep a lot of their arm dry and , provided you get them on a radiator as soon as you're in, no problems dm.isbjornofsweden.com/en/articles/2.18.840/isbjorn-winterglove-kids

We live near the mountains and ski all winter. Kids are now 9 to 14 but have been here since the youngest was 2. The best we have found are Hestra Heli Mitts (removable wool liners, leather outers and elastic straps that go round the wrists, we also have Odlo glove liners for very cold days), socks with the highest percentage of wool we can find, the brand we used when they were younger is no longer available but Icebreaker 70% merino seems good and snowboots are always Sorel with removable wool liners.

Onatreebyariver · 16/11/2018 07:52

Hestra. We got all ours for the kids off ebay in great condition.

Gloves are the one thing you don't want to scrimp on. Cold hands will ruin your whole holiday

anniehm · 16/11/2018 08:24

Aldi have good gear, France isn't that cold (if you go to Scandinavia or Scotland wind is a big factor so different kit is suggested according to my ski instructor friend. Buy liner gloves if you are worried but whenever I've been in the alps I've taken gloves off because I was hot
