First time family ski-ing - what to pack? clothes to buy?

Have booked to go ski-ing for February. I have never been ski-ing before so have no idea what to expect, neither have my two primary school children. DH went ski-ing as a child, but can't remember much.
We have booked a private group lesson (so that we can all learn together).
But, what do I need to pack in terms of clothes? Shall I hire or shall I buy? And if so, ca anyone recommend any online retailers please?

In resort everyone is is ski boots or snow boots. You could take light trainers to wear in chalet.

Just read you are in Tignes, wouldn't bother with buggy, it's high, if going in Feb it's gonna likely be snowy on the ground and hard to push buggy. Took Bugaboo (frog - with big back wheels) for DD2 5 months in December and had to use it backwards to get anywhere - as in back wheels forward to go.

Forget a buggy, hire a sled if needs be. Yes take sunglasses for everyone as you don't want to wear goggles unless skiing , and snow glare is painful. Merino, fleece (or cotton high neck which absorb sweat better) and jacket should be enough. Wear boots and jacket to travel.

Contact the chalet and ask if they have sleds to borrow. Otherwise you can hiire or see if buying a cheap one works out cheaper.

Get one of those travel drying Aires's. It is a hook with pegs attached. Useful to hang up gloves/buffs/socks etc in your bathroom to dry. I usually take two. Also hand sanitizers which are pocket sized and small snacks the kids can put in their jacket pockets. They get so hungry when skiing.

Thank you so much everyone. They are the nitty gritty questions that aren’t answered anywhere.

Muddy Puddles do brilliant ski jackets that can be used as a coat so the cost seems reasonable, and often have good sales. They do other ski wear too.

But Decathlon is stupidly cheap for what you get, as is Mountain Warehouse.

We found two sets of thermals plenty as even in a hotel there were drying racks and towel rails for washing things out. They dry quickly.

FitBitFanClub · 20/01/2018 23:14

An invaluable tip I learned way too late on in the day, was to pack each person's socks/thermals in separate carrier bags in the case. This was particularly useful when the kids grew and it wasn't immediately obvious whose socks were whose. If possible, when you're buying, get different colours per person.

Raaaaaah · 21/01/2018 09:44

Yes that’s a good point Fit. There was another stressed looking lady in decathlon yesterday who pointed out that every kid on every family ski holiday would be wearing identikit decathlon. I thought then that I should probably label stuff if I get a mo.

Raaaaaah · 21/01/2018 09:45

I’m glad that you say the muddy puddle ski coats are good youcanstay as that’s what I got the big kids in one of their everlasting sales.

FitBitFanClub · 21/01/2018 11:07

Raaaaaah, I remember a particularly uncomfortable morning's skiing, when I couldn't work out why my socks were stuck mid-calf.
We now have black for dh, red for me, navy for ds and shocking pink for dd. Cliched but useful. Same for thermals.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 21/01/2018 12:36

Raaaaah they are great. Three years after purchase ours are still going strong as winter coats for siblings, with daily wear. And we only paid about £15 for them. Those had zip out fleeces too so they got fleeces and coats from it. Sadly they seem to have stopped doing those as the one I bought last year doesn't have it - just a fleece lining. But still a very good coat.
