How much do you spend on a family ski holiday?

Sorry nosey question but am thinking of doing first family ski holiday next Feb half term. Can I ask what sort of prices people pay? Children will be 7 and 5; DH is non-skier. One company has quoted me £3.5k for a week in a catered chalet in France. I think this includes transport and children's ski lessons but not lift passes or ski hire. Does self-catering work out a lot cheaper?

This year out Feb half term trip for 3 cost us around £1200 for flights, car hire and accommodation. Ski hire, lift passes and some lessons on top probably added around another £1500. We ate out most nights and this was fairly inexpensive despite the exchange rate as most places were pizza or crepes.

However this was because I was incredibly lucky and managed to get the flights the minute they came out and found a super cheap but lovely apartment.

Next year we're looking at Easter because it's so early and hopefully the slopes will be slightly less congested.

If you're booking yourself I'd advise to try and opt for a resort that has shuttle bus transfers unless you're confident about driving through snowy conditions. Luckily there are loads of resorts within easy travelling distance of airports.

Also somethings that caught us out the first time we went. Car hire from the ski resort airports seems to be fairly pricey as do transfers so even though a package holiday may not seem like good value, it does have those thrown in.

If you rent a French apartment through an agency the base price quoted will be much increased by sheet hire, towel hire and final cleaning. There will also be literally nothing - no salt, no sugar, zilch - in the apartment. Oh and I found them to be really inflexible about the check out process as they have to come and check the apartment before you leave - even if you've paid the exorbitant cleaning fee - which is stressful when you're trying to leave to get to the airport, then they tut at you if the apartment is not spotless - even though you've paid the exorbitant cleaning fee.

Sorry xenophobic rant over Blush - we made sure to rent from an English couple this time and the experience couldn't have been more different. We even had a kettle and toaster !

Also if you are first time skiers it is nice to be able to talk to others about their ski experiences - I think DH missed out on this by us going s/c on our two trips.

Enjoy - it's a fabulous family holiday.

2 adults, 2 teens, 1 child Feb half term. Fully catered chalet, flights, transfers, lift passes, full day guiding/lessons, lunches on the mountain and ski hire - around 10k. Worth every penny!

We book it separately. For example, this year for 4 of us in the Italian Alps:

Flights, Monday to Monday, Feb half term: £450

Accommodation, lovely aparthotel: 1500 euros

Transport / transfer: should have been £300, but ended up being £800 - don't ask Hmm

Ski passes: 850 euros (yours will be cheaper, you probably won't have to pay for kids, nor will you pay for DH if he doesn't ski)

Ski & boot Hire for kids, we have our own: 95 euros for week

Ski school for kids: 380 euros

meals (breakfast in apartment, lunch on mountain, coffees, evening dinner out): approx 130 euros per day

So in total, without the transport blip, it was more or less £4k.

Rookiemere sounds like you were unlucky with your apartment experience. Ours had everything! Fondue sets, crepe makers, coffee makers. It was better equipped than my kitchen at home Blush

I can really recommend Italy. Having skied in France for years, I would never go back. It's so much cheaper, much less crowded, and the Italians fuss and coddle over the children with small groups, unlike French ESF bootcamp ski lessons where there are 14 crying children snaking down a mountain...

Lunch on the mountain for 4 of us, with drinks, usually worked out at 40euro.

Champoluc and Pila have been really good resorts for us.
