foxtrot · 03/02/2007 21:37

mars bars
camera

LIZS · 04/02/2007 10:16

lol foxtrot - have yet to find anywhere in the Alps you can't find a Mars bar or handy packs of tissues come to that , Legacy !
Fleece head/ear band and warm hat to ski in.
Shoes/trainers for indoors.

foxtrot · 04/02/2007 10:32

But the mars are about quid in the alpes and 20p in a multipack here - that leaves more cash for the vin chaud

lapsedrunner · 04/02/2007 10:41

Mugs, can't bear trying to enjoy a cup of tea out of a tiny coffee cup.

MrsBadger · 04/02/2007 10:46

ski goggles
sponge bag
string thingy / clip / elastic for ski pass
daypack (I hate skiing with a bum bag)
laundry tabs (so you can do a wash half way through the week and come home with less smelly stuff)

if self-catering and driving (guess you're not given mini-kettle) we always take oil, ketchup, salt, pepper, rice, pasta, dishwasher tabs, decent knife and chopping board, also a couple of dinners (bolognese, chilli) frozen in tupperwares.

kookaburra · 04/02/2007 12:59

Gee thanks - have printed the list and will use for my packing too (tho'' excel format would have been more convenient )
Could you post another one for beach hols?

mamhaf · 04/02/2007 17:06

Haven't done this year's summer hol one yet -actually it's a camping one so has loads on it, and is based one one already on MN. Agree about the bumbag, but have found one that folds out as a backpack - put the sarnies in it first thing then fold it down to a bumbag later. Would rather ski without either, but look enough like the Michelin man without stuffing pockets too. Can't wait! Getting the ski part of the fun.

Getting the ski gear out is part of the fun is what I meant.

Our ski essential: a supply of creme eggs, caramel eggs, rolo eggs (if you can fnd them), mini creme eggs and mini eggs!

Great energy boosts on the slopes!

MrsMills · 07/02/2007 13:58

skis?

prettybird · 07/02/2007 14:14

We always hire ours. I suppose we should thik about buying - but the hassle of trying to transport them (and we tend to do complicated jounrey, like fly to Paris, then RER, then couchette down to the Alps) has always put us off.

MrsBadger · 07/02/2007 14:22

would recommend boiled sweets for on-slope energy, because unlike Creme Eggs they don't make a nasty mess if you fall over with one in your pocket and/or leave your jacket to dry on a radiator...

bettys · 07/02/2007 14:24

Boiled sweets can stick to your pockets; I'm taking Tracker bars!
Great list, reminded me to pack the walkie-talkies.
Would also add Savlon, EHIC cards and travel games.

prettybird · 07/02/2007 14:26

... but I like my nice cold Creme eggs - and they never get back to the chalet to run the risk of going onto a radiator!

But we did get a squashed one in our luggage last year! The foil is actually quite good at keeping it all together, but they are not so nice to eat!

mountaingirl · 07/02/2007 17:44

Don't forget the camera and the video!! Thanks goodness you are taking the car. Also it is snowing and forcast to over the next few days, have you got snow chains? Books to read, dvd player in the car to keep kids amused along with dvds. Goggles, hat, fleece chaud devant (neck warmer). Suntan lotion + small pocket ones for the jackets. Plasters, compeed plasters for blisters. I wouldn't buy skis unless you ski lots each year they change so much each year and it is great trying out beautifully serviced new models. Have a fantastic holiday , where are you going?

Thanks for all the extra ideas - yes, we will have a DVD - essential for at least 12 hours in the car! We'll be staying in Brides-les-Bains and taking the gondola to Meribel each morning. Snow chains are packed, but hope they won't be needed as Brides is quite low - also don't think I can stand the male angst involved in fitting them again, especially as it relies on me driving over them in a very straight line and on exactly the right track. Can't be worse than last time though when dh almost reversed us over a cliff on the hairpin bends on the way up to La Plagne. Amazing we're still married really.

We're off to Meribel too tomorrow. Doing it by plane/train (have done it by car in the past), so that we too can squeeze in two Saturdays!
