Thinking of buying ski boots the are about £80 or would it just be easier to rent. How much does it usually cost to rent skis and boots for a week?

How good a skier are you and how often do you go? £80 boots are unlikely to be very sophisticated and while you are learning you need different levels of flex which an entry pair may not give you. Better to hire a pair locally and negotiate to buy if they really suit you.

If you prebook through a company like ski set you could at upwards of 50- 100 euros per week. If you are new to skiing it is usually better to hire as a shop can offer different brands to ensure they fit well and you can return to the shop if there are problems and swap over. If you do want to buy from snow and rock go to one of their stores attached to a ski slope such as Hemel Hempstead so you can try them out.

you also need to work out if you are going to drive or fly. some of what you save by not having to hire you will lose through paying for extra baggage

I bought ski boots after I had a completely faffy holiday where I had a different pair of boots every day for 4 days as none were comfortable as I have 'funny' shaped and sized feet (basically size 3.5 so all they mainly had were kids boots which were too narrow).

I wouldn't buy blind though - what I did after that holiday where I spent more time in the ski shop than on the trails was take a photo of the comfy boots from the outside so I got the model number and of the sizing label so I knew exactly what size I needed. Then I spent 6 months scouting around for a cheap pair.
