It's where I first learned to ski back in 2002 with a friend pre DC! I'd never been before, so with nothing to compare it to I was more than happy. Okay so some of the equipment/lifts were a little old but it was still safe and that's the important thing.
As a beginner there was more than enough there. Now I know what I'm doing I'd find it quite restrictive but I'd imagine up to my second week on snow I wouldn't have got bored.
The weirdest thing was the McDonalds half way up the mountain - no idea if it is still there! Bulgarian McDonalds are not the same as what we're used to though, I should warn you!!
It's incredibly cheap once you're there (as well as the holiday itself!) I kept having to pinch myself over the prices. And that was the tourist prices - I noticed the ski instructors etc had a separate menu in most places with even cheaper prices but all written in Bulgarian, heh. One of the things I remember most was all the tourist tat for sale, crystal figures, ornamental daggers, all for seemingly a few pounds. I came back with So Much Stuff as souvenirs for not just me but everybody else and spent well under £100 in total for the whole week.
The English of my ski instructor was fine and he was really good.
My package was a flight into Sophia - that was a horrendously long transfer so if you can get a flight to Plovdiv you should.
Anyway, I had a great time in 2002 and I can't imagine much would have changed!
