Ski Schools in La Plagne

Evening!

We've booked to go skiing in La Plagne at Easter. I was just wondering if anyone can recommend a ski school there?

We're staying at La Plagne 1800, I wasn't sure whether ESF had upped their game these days? I'm still left with childhood angst from ski lessons 30 years later Blush

We prefer to go with english ski schools wherever possible. Try googling BASI qualified instructors.

The groups tend to be smaller, you have more of a laugh as everyone is English and I'm told that the ESF use archaic teaching methods.

Thanks Maita! That's what I was thinking. There seems to be two schools, Reflex and Oxygene but Reflex don't seem to be running group classes at Easter and Oxygene is a bus ride away. Decisions! Will google BASI, thank you!

We stuck our then 4 and 6 year old in ESF (through Crystal) back at Easter 2013. It really was the only ski school in 1800 as far as I could tell as there were no non-ESF meeting points there that I saw. The rest were all up the mountain in Plagne Centre or elsewhere, although to be fair it was only a short lift ride or two to the centre. Never actually used the bus.

The ESF didn't appear great but it wasn't terrible either. The groups weren't huge probably because it was Easter, and the instructors weren't mean as far as I could see. One was more "lighter" and humorous than the other (fortunately this was the one teaching our four year old!) and there weren't many (any?) other English children in the group. We stalked them a few times on the mountain and there was an awful lot of "follow me" going on.

Our six year old was really challenged and did lots of off piste down gulleys and up the sides of runs, and a few red runs on what was her first week on snow, albeit having completed a full series of lessons indoors at Hemel first.

Our four year old, same set of lessons at Hemel, we discovered all over the area too, mostly on blue runs although the main route back into 1800 is a rather steep red run and it was funny to watch them all topple like dominoes (no doubt exhausted!) whilst we were waiting to pick them up! She started out in the snow garden and stayed in 1800 on the first day but the fact we were finding her all over by the end shows how much they learned.

Both girls really really enjoyed themselves (and both are quite sensitive souls) and their skiing improved far beyond what we'd been expecting so whatever it was they were doing, even though it didn't look great, it clearly worked!

We had a couple of private lessons for ourselves through Reflex, and our instructor was really good. She was happy to meet us at the lift in 1800 too. I can really recommend them.

Thanks Crispy! That's basically what I wanted to find out :-). We've only got a dry ski slope locally (nearest 100 miles away...) which I'm debating about getting the kids some lessons on but hubby is dead against it. My boys are 4 and 7 so very similar in age to your girls so it's perfect info, thanks!

They'll be fine not going in advance. I'm pretty sure there were some total beginners in the youngest's group and due to age (so she couldn't go with the 5+ groups) she basically had to wait for them to catch up. On proper snow with less faffing about with lifts they learn far far faster. For our six year old she was put into a non-beginner class due to her clear experience, but to be honest they seemed to be fairly fluid about moving them between groups over the week depending on ability. So it doesn't matter where they start out, they progress on their own curve very well.

Have a brilliant time!! We loved La Plagne Grin

MrsCornish · 10/03/2015 22:44

we used ski reflex in 1800 last year, they were brilliant

Theworldhasgonecrazy · 26/03/2015 22:48

Oxygene are fab! Only 2 lifts up to Plagne centre meeting point, or they can collect you in a minibus, or the local free bus is easy enough to catch. All the instructors speak excellent English (they are mainly French but the odd Brit and Italian). Plenty of movement in the groups if finding it too easy or too hard. Would highly recommend them!

Thanks for the extra replies!

For anyone wondering... We used Oxygene in the end and they were amazing. (Reflex could only offer private lessons at Easter) my boys did brilliantly. We're so impressed were looking to go back to La Plagne next year just so we can use them again ??
