Under helmets

It's been 7 years since I last skied and we are going at half term for the first time with the children (6 &4). Obviously the use of helmets has increased dramatically - when I last went no one in our party wore one and I have no experience of wearing one.
What do children wear under their helmets? My local ski shop said that many children wear beanie hats under their helmets but that seems to me that the helmet would therefore not be fitting snugly. What do your kids wear? Would a "shellaclava" be better? Do adults wear anything under them?

Thanks in advance.

They do get very hot under helmets. Agree beanie not best as muffles sound too. A neck warmer or buff might be good to fill the gap.

We went 2 weeks ago and my friend's daughter just wore the helmet on it's own.

Helmets are warm, I wouldn't wear anything under it. If I was worried about the kids I buy them one of those thin balaclava things.

You can buy helmets with inbuilt fleecy stuff but obvs then you're a bit stuck for spring skiing....

I think you'd only need something under if you were going to N America and it was going to be particularly cold, like minus 20 or something.

A buff or a thin jersey material beanie.
I prefer a buff as I can have it over my ears and back of neck but not the top of my head or forehead. My goggles meet my lid so I don't want another layer there.

Buffs are pretty popular, yep. There's ones with holes for breathing through which look quite good.

A lot depends on where/when you're going. When I went in early January to Val Thorens (stupidly high) it was extremely cold and I ended up with a lot of wind burn and chapped lips as I didn't have a buff. But at La Plagne in April I definitely didn't need anything - skied with my coat open most of the time, aside from the odd blizzard.

Nothing here, whatever the weather!

Our dc have never worn anything under their helmets. On cold/snowy days they wear windstopper fleece neck muffs.

I on the other hand am a cold soul and always carry a thin thermal hat that I often wear underneath my helmet as well as my neck muff.

Mostly nothing, on the very cold days three years ago, -10 to -19, we used running hats, which also fit under cycling helmets when required.

We are skiing in Austria this week and I think a very thin but broad hair band over their ears will keep the draft out. The one I brought was too thick and uncomfortable and the ski shops are selling the thin ones for about £22 pounds. I would make sure they had a buff. If it is cold you don't want any gaps. It has been very hot though so have been taking layers off.

I wear nothing under my helmet normally unless it's really cold when I will wear my buff as a balaclava. Usually my helmet makes me feel too hot.

I think the helmets that you can wear beanies under have a removable liner that you take out so that the helmet is snug when not wearing a beanie. I've seen a few advertised as " beanie convertible".
