First ski holiday - packing tips

Hi,

I'm going on my first ski holiday next week, ive just packed my case and its 6kg under the luggage allowance. I've packed all the usual stuff such as coat, scallopetts, base layers, googles and clothes to wear on the evening.

Has anyone got any ideas for other useful things I can pack?

I like jogging bottoms & a fleece this isn't a SB thread for post bath lounging, with comfy slippers. Are you in a chalet or hotel?
Kindle.

Thanks for the tip, I'll add some comfy clothes to my case.

We're staying in a apartment block self catering, so I might try to take some food aswell.

Sturdy walking boots are essential.
I always take loads of pocket snacks too; nutty bars, almonds, mars bar etc because the treats are so expensive up the mountain.
The other thing I've found is not to bother with special clothes for the evenings, most resorts unless it's somewhere like St Moritz are very casual. Warmth is key but accommodation is often really warm so layers are important.
Have a great time.

Hand warmers, decent sunscreen, ear plugs, luxury bath products, nail scissors and file to keep toe nails really short (big toenail went black and fell off once because I forgot to trim it!)

High factor sunscreen
Lip balm
Neck warmer
Sunglasses & retaining cord
Tea bags

Don't pack your coat, wear it. You might need it on the transfer.

Ok, my well honed ski packing list goes like this (presume 6 days skiing)

For skiing:
2 thermal socks
2 thermal vests
2 thermal leggings
2 salopettes
One jacket
Gloves plus inners
Goggles
Sunglasses
Hat
Headband
Helmet
Sun cream
Lift pass holder
Ski ties and sundry accessories

For evening

2 jeans
2 jumpers
3 t shirts
7 socks
14 knickers - yes I know but I like a clean pair in the evening!
Sturdy shoes

Also take slippers or something for breakfast in the morning. You'll probably wear your thermals but won't want your salopettes on so take joggers or something comfy to throw on.
You'll also need slippers for walking down to the ski room.

Skis and boots, if you have them.
Toiletries.
Passports and money.

I've probably missed something, but that's the basics off the top of my head.

BakingMad91 · 11/01/2015 17:17

Thanks everyone, lots of great ideas here!

My new list is:
Thermal base layers
2 jumpers
2 hoodies
4 t shirts
Jog bottoms
Hoody
Jeans
Ski sock
Ski trousers
Ski coat
Ski boots
Googles
Sun glasses
Gloves
Underwear
Slippers
Toiliteries
Lip balm
Hand warmers
Hair dryer
Travel games
Chocolate bars/snacks

Does this seem about right? I'm going with friends so I've only got myself to pack for.

I would add a hat, plus think about shoes. Your walking around in the evening shoes should be thermal and non slip (moon boots are ideal), unless you're in the chalet then you'll need normal leather boots.

Plus slippers and ski boots it seems a lot, but you'll use them all.

Whereas I always find I never wear all the t shirts and jumpers I take, as I don't put them on until just before dinner, which means they do lots of evenings before they get dirty.

PestoStormissimos · 11/01/2015 22:26

Don't forget a fleece neckwarmer!!

LemonEmmaP · 11/01/2015 22:36

I have a couple of the Buff polar neck warmers (well, not Buff but cheap imitations) which I really like to use while skiing. They're cosy, and you can pull them up under your helmet/over your face if it's really chilly.

I'd also suggest you want different gloves for evenings and for skiing - the latter will still be drying if you want to go out for the evening.

I'd suggest you take reusable shopping bags if you have any - most European supermarkets charge for them, so I always take a couple with me.

I'd also take some sunscreen - I take a big bottle and apply before I go out each day, and have a smaller tube that I take out to top up later if it is particularly sunny.

Definitely agree you need a hat for evenings, particularly if it's snowing as you'll get cold and wet.

For skiing itself, I wear a thermal top, thermal leggings and a polo neck under my salopettes/ski jacket - I'm not sure from your list if you've got the polo neck bit included.

Enjoy!

Brilliant thread!

swantail · 15/01/2015 16:52

A 4 gang UK extension cable so that you don't have to fight over adapters to get everything charged up overnight.

flashheartscanoe · 15/01/2015 18:07

You've probably gone by now but...

If self catering and I have spare weight I always take-
tea
coffee
pesto
ketchup
sugar
salt
tabasco etc.

Just saves you having to buy everything when you get there.

MargoReadbetter · 18/01/2015 08:18

Quick place marking before i head to the shops later. Thanks all (newbie "skiier").

GoofyIsACow · 18/01/2015 08:23

Great thread! Thanks

For those using this thread as a packing guide I should add that I forgot to list 2 polo necks which go over the thermal vests Smile

I also second taking multipacks of Mars and snickers as mid morning snacks.

PestoFrostissimos · 19/01/2015 10:03

I also took a travel kettle & some Rooiboois tea bags. I also recommend taking a couple of Klip-its to keep large opened packets of crisps/snacks fresh in your rucksack Grin

MargoReadbetter · 20/01/2015 07:05

I spent £200 on Sunday! And that's without the actual ski gear. I hope we get lots of cold winters. As pay-per-wear goes this must be pretty poor return. unless you count a lb falling off from frostbite.

forwarding · 20/01/2015 07:18

£200 on what?

I get my thermals from the local market and the polo necks etc are things I've had years.

If you're not bothered about fashion and you ski a lot it's actually decent value. I think the last new thing I bought was my jacket - TK Maxx about 6 years ago.

My ski boots are 20 years old Blush
