Anyone skied in Canada or the USA?

DH and I have been skiing for about 25 years, but never outside Europe. We'd love to go to the USA or Canada but don't know where to start looking. We've been tempted by tales of long uncrowded slopes! We are a bit worried about the cost, there seem to be good offers, but there are always extra costs.

We don't really want a car if possible and would like somewhere where we could walk to the slopes, but I don't know if there are resorts like that.

I suppose budget would be around £2000 for flights, transfers and hotel, but cheaper would be even better!

Does anyone have any recommendations? If someone could suggest good resorts and hotels, that would be great. :)

If you don't want to hire a car you'll have to go with a British package. There are lots to choose from - all the main companies do the big resorts in the USA and Canada. Otherwise, you'll definitely need a car.

I've skiied in lots of the big resorts in the USA - the best ones IMO were Vail, Breckenridge and Aspen. All amazing skiing, lots of it, tons of powder, and good apres-ski in the resorts. In Aspen the dining on the mountain is also good, but that's unusual - generally its a choice of burger, hot dog or pizza. Aspen, however is a long way from Denver and very expensive. Vail and Breck are on the main road through the Rockies and, as such, are easier to get to. Distances, however, are big out there. Many Brits like Whistler in Canada, but I've never been and I know the weather can be grey and rainy if you're unlucky (its not far from the coast).

We did Banff/Lake Louise. Lifts, slopes, facilities amazing.

But just not as much atmosphere as European resorts IMO

Loved Vail but decided it was too far for a week.
Great motorway skiing, the back bowls (tame off piste) are great, snow sure & no queues make for a great holiday.
But being awake at 4am every morning was no fun.

We loved Whistler. Such a different experience than skiing in France!!

Have you looked at Kimberley? Not usually as cold as Banff/Lake Louise, lovely skiing and a nice little village. Or Silver Star?

Lake Louise opens Friday...just as an aside Grin

On mountain dining in the US and Canada are not the same as in Europe. The lack of people in the lift queues and on the slopes make up for it Smile.
