Advice please - Children's goggles over glasses?

We're taking our children ski-ing for the first time this year. My DS is 9 and wears glasses all the time. I think i've got all the clothing etc except for goggles. Can anyone recommend any goggles that will fit over glasses for children? he's relatively tall for his age, but slim build. We are planning to hire helmets with the skis & boots, so I'm concerned about whether the goggles i buy will fit with a helmet etc. We haven't skied for a few years, so never used helmets - although we are planning on hiring them this year.

Why can't you get goggles with his prescription in? Most opticians I know do this.

i'd go ask in a sports shop type ski goggle place....i'd expect the prescription goggles to be extra pricey and then you have the dilemma of keeping the specs safe so he can put them on as soon as he takes off the goggles.

contact lenses might be an option....he is young, but mine have worn them for sporty things at that age,

Hmm - that's a possibility, but would mean he'd have to take his glasses with him as if he lifted up his goggles - eg in a cafe/ on a lift then he won't be able to see. Also I haven't looked yet, but I think they will be quite expensive, and probably only used once as we're unlikely to be ski-ing every year.

I cross posted with you there Catsmamma. how do yours get on with contact lenses? I think I've put my son off as I'm a bit squeamish about all things eye related and I don't think I could put contact lenses in for him. Neither my husband nor I wear glasses so I've never had to get over this!! I wouldn't say he's immature for his age, but he's definitely not mature, and last time we went to the optician he mentioned lenses and DS said he didn't want them. he has prescription goggles for football and swimming.

My 9yo DD starts skiing lessons next week at school and wears glasses full-time. I've solved the problem by getting her prescription sunglasses instead of goggles. Our local optician had a big selection for kids.

My 8yo ds wears his glasses all the time and has OTG goggles. They weren't expensive and he gets on well with them. I'm not at home so I can't check the make. Think they were bought from amazon. He does tend to keep them on all the time.

At 12 in the school skiing trip, I just wore adult googles over my glasses.

thonah · 17/01/2014 16:52

Thanks all!. I have searched OTG goggles and now found some kids ones. i think that will be the best solution. owlmother - have you found any problem with helmets fitting with the OTG goggles?

I used OTG goggles until I had my eyes lasered. They fit with helmets fine. They are just slightly bigger than normal goggles.

OwlMother · 17/01/2014 21:49

To be honest the OTG goggles look exactly the same as his brothers regular ones. He has a salomon kids helmet- not a fancy one- and they fit perfectly. I've just checked his goggles, they're red Smith ones.
