Anyone been to Borovets?

We have just booked half term hols at the Flora apartments. I am aware that the resort gets mixed reviews, but it was the only place we could afford (that or andorra).

Any tips?

Any suggestions re which ski school to choose?

Oh, and should I be worried about the sleaze factor?

i went 5 years ago and it was fab!!! I'd been to Andorra (pas de la casa) and whilst that was great, borovets was equally good imo - but very different.

Its very pretty - traditional like - Andorra was good but more 'english'. there were no english pubs in borovets when i went but thats not a bad thing!

Borovets is very basic though - nowhere was gritted, 'meat' (not sure which animal!) sold in restaurants - and very cheap wine etc. There are a few sex clubs with strippers etc but they were not in your face as such - although one did have wide open legs on the front!

The skiing is amazing - through forests etc rather than man- made runs like in andorra. We went with airtours so joined their ski school. we went on a fab skidoo trip - amazing- proper winter wonderland!

As nowhere was gritted (may have changed) good footwear! In andorra it was fine once you got off the slope and you could even wear heals if you wanted but borovets was a good few feet of snow everywhere! It was much colder / snowier in borovets too - i had to replace my ski glasses with goggles by day 2!

I loved it both and would return to both again.

thanks sunny day. did you have children when you went?

no (incidently found out i was pregnant the day i got back!).

Cant comment on the kids ski school but saw loads of kids about - there are loads of british people there - just not many british businesses. Everyone spoke english and food was pretty normal. We went feb/march and like i said it was very cold and snowed heavily at times but that was nice! There were a couple of discos and swimming pools etc. There were a couple of nice mountain pubs too.

cant remember much more other than TONS of snow which was quite a contrast to andorra where the snow was largely only on the slope with very little on the roads and pathways.

we stayed at hotel bor and even thoughb we were half board we ate out all the time as it was v. cheap - not sure if bulgaria has the euro now though- then you could get 2 course meal with wine for under £10!

noonar · 30/12/2011 19:51

thanks. i gather it is still cheap, but not quite as cheap as before. not in euro zone.

Hi, I went to Borovets in 2006 and had a great time. It's quite a small resort and quite basic but we loved it. It was really warm when we went and I remember lots of sitting outside cafes having lunch in glorious sunshine. There are some nice pubs/bars and a great little place that does crepes and hot chocs in the afternoon.

Also, not sure how old your dc are but under the big main hotel there is an arcade type place where we did rifle shooting and mini ten pin bowling for hardly any money. That was quite fun Smile. You can also get a horse and cart ride up to the slopes if you are at the bottom like we were.

Bad points were the food (we seemed to get turkey twizzlers no matter what we ordered!) and the roads from the airport - REALLY major pot holes and just unbelieveable actually. It is the most travel sick I've ever felt.

I'd agre with the other poster about slippery paths - def need snow boots for night time.

I have been to Andorra twice and do prefer it though - a bit more like civilisation to me!

Have a great time and remember to come back and say how it went x

hi happy camper. thanks for your post Smile. dds are 7.5 and almost 10.

andorra long transfers put me off tbh. am a bit concerned that borovets might be a bit of a borat style holiday but its all we could afford.

should i have chosen andorra??

Nah, you'll have a great time Grin

I'm not sure your dd's would be allowed to do the shotting then, but the mini bowling they'd probably like.

Just make sure to take some travel sickness tablets Wink

Grin thanks

Hi, we will also be in Borovets for half term staying in a nearby apartment complex to the Flora. Our son is almost 10.

Maybe we will meet each other - I will be spending most of my time either flat on my bottom or terrified, attempting to ski greens with my tongue sticking out.

We went to Borovets last January and loved it. It's basic but has character!

babybaabaa · 04/01/2012 18:52

Oh definitely Hunters ski school for lessons too.

noonar · 06/01/2012 10:30

I have a tip:
Do not exchange currency there. I had read that a lot of exchange places were dodgy. I thought I had been really careful, using a busy kiosk in the town centre, checking the rates and small print. Still, when I got home and checked my bank statement I saw I had been defrauded of £80 on a £200 transaction!
Despite that we had great fun. It is cheap and cheerful but we met a lot of nice people and did plenty of activities.
