Ski trip wardrobe essentials for on the slopes and off - please advise a novice!

We're considering our first ever ski trip for winter half-term.

What clothes/gear would I need for a week long trip - both on the slopes and off?

And, would much appreciate any catalogue and/or mail order 'secret sources'!

TIA.

only bring two pairs of ski socks each. This was a rookie error of mine - to bring 7 pairs! The yjust dry -out overnight and will fine for the next day.

lip salve essential. and a helmet imo. def. gloves. goggles optional. a thermal type top ( again only 2-3 not 7 for a week).

saloupettes, obv. and you're away!

You need a thermal layer (we go for silk l/s vest and leggings being sensitive souls). From Patra or some ski shops have them, my vests are lacy and pretty from Bella di Notte.

Then I make everyone wear a cotton polo which the DCs hate - l/s t-shirts are just as good, wear a buff to cover the neck if the temp drops. Thin fleece for everyone, plus outer ski jackets and salopettes, obv.

My DCs always wear goggles; DS2 is a redhead and if he goes without he gets terribly sore, swollen eyes.

Decent gloves, plus liners for the DCs as their hands get chilled more quickly and the longer they stay warm, the longer you'll all have on the slopes!
Those mini tubes of suncream with lip salve in the lid are good; you can get them on a string to go round the neck. Just one or two between the family should be enough.

Never been in a chalet, but for evenings at the hotel I usually take a k utter dress or two, plus a few eveningy-but-not-too-dressy tops to go with smart jeans or a shortish skirt, woolly tights, boots. If I was going this year I'd make sure I had a pair of velvet skinnies.
HTH!

K utter dress?
Knitted dress!

You'll find there are a lot of lists around from previous seasons so have a search back.
I always take 2 pairs of gloves for the kids for daytime and a pair for nightime. (i get 1 day 1 night pair).and 2 pairs salopettes for any child who might have an 'accident'.
if you watch the special offers in aldi and lidl they do cheap skigear, usually november and january i think. It's not bad quality stuff, and is very cheap, so you can afford 2 pairs gloves, and maybe spare thermals if you so desire.matalan also do skiwear but not for kids and i have no idea what it is like.
there's normally ski wear on ebay too.
Hire or buy helmets for all of you - it's worth preventing head injuries if you can (there are long debates about this, but i get a cold head anyway).
i take 3 outfits for evening - smart casual if i am going out/having to talk to other adults. and snowboots to wear at night!

WhatsWrongWithYou · 22/09/2011 13:27

I definitely agree re helmets - in fact, I think it's compulsory for children under a certain age in some countries. We always wear them ourselves as well - can't see any reasons other than lack of coolness for not wearing one, tbh.
And don't forget woolly hats for everyone, for when you're outside off the slope.

Thanks for all the tips.

I'll do a search for past lists.

Might come back with more queries when I've had a chance to read/think about all the advice.

I second silk thermals - much better than the high-tech ones, I find. Mine are from M&S Autograph range rather than a ski shop! My squillion pound North Face (I think) ones were so tight round the wrists they cut the circulation off to my hands and I needed help to get in and out of them! And they weren't even that warm.

Good sunglasses and goggles.

A cross-body bag for the evening if you will be going out so you don't have to put a decent bag down on any of the disgusting surfaces in the bar!

Ideally, something you wear should be a distinctive colour so the people you are with can find you on the slopes! My jacket is turquoise and DH can always find me. His is black and I always ski past him if he waits for me.

Not that we'll be going again for flipping ages as I'm pregnant and we will have no money for the forseeable future...

Matalan now have children's wear in and they have little rubber fleece lined boots.

nametapes · 26/10/2011 08:41

At least 6 pairs of ski socks.
Baselayer top and leggings
Supportive bras for skiing (unless you are tiny)
Neck muffler to cover chin and lower face in very cold weather when skiing.

I'd recommend mittens for the kids, rather than gloves. They're warmer and a lot less trouble getting the right fingers in the right holes (depends how old your DCs are of course).

Ski resorts are, naturally, full of shops and it takes a few trips to work out the accessories that work for you - and to pinch ideas from other people. You don't need to panic about being perfectly equipped before you get there.

Er, yes, they are, but in my experience, shockingly expensive.
